/On Friday. Dec. 23, Judge Ryu granted a preliminary injunction to stop #SanFrancisco from enforcing ordinances that prohibit involuntarily homeless individuals from sitting, lying, or sleeping on public property. However, this does not mean #sweeps will cease completely.
/The ruling, “does not prevent the city from enforcing laws against public nuisance, protecting accessibility and sidewalk path of travel, or abating unsanitary conditions.”

/These types of abatements happen in #Berkeley, which has serious consequences for #unhoused residents’ mental and physical health. “When you consistently lose your stuff in this manner, you begin to lose your mind,” said Eren, a camp resident. bitly.ws/yciE
/And in #Oakland. Judge Orrick allowed Caltrans to clear the #WoodStreet encampment where an estimated 300 unsheltered people were living, along with a massive accumulation of burned-out cars and debris that the agency didn’t want to clean for years.
/A #UCSF study found #sweeps may worsen mental wellbeing by causing depressive symptoms, anxiety, fear, stress, a sense of dehumanization, loss of trust and security, hopelessness and loss of motivation.” bitly.ws/yipe
/Material losses from #sweeps cause “less effective management of chronic health conditions, infectious diseases, and substance use disorders, and a loss of mobility devices may lead to increased injuries.”
/#Sweeps disrupt trust between #unhoused residents and city staff, “leading to an antagonistic and unpredictable living environment that necessitates survival - and crisis-driven decision making.” This environment distances people from working toward long-term stability.
/These contradictory actions are referred to as "the 'necropolitics of care' by which marginalized people are subjected simultaneously to both #compassion and #brutality, or to brutality as a gatekeeper or even penance for access to health and social interventions.”
/Dean Preston’s calls for a wake-up call to @londonbreed. But, it should also be a wake-up call to @cityofBerkeley and @Oakland to stop their #sweeps and harassing their #unhoused population. OR all unhoused residents in the #BayArea will have one destination: SAN FRANCISCO.
/It should also be a wake-up call to #journalists! Media coverage has normalized this behavior by simply quoting city officials without also looking at the REAL consequences these practices have #unhoused people.#Berkeley spent ~$50k on this #sweep. But what was the #human cost?
