This year we witnessed some of the greatest challenges to open society values of our time. I'm hopeful that we can look to the progress we anticipate what’s over the horizon for this next year. Here are a few things that give me hope for 2023.
We were reminded in January that justice is possible with a landmark verdict in the first torture trial against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. justiceinitiative.org/newsroom/first…
2022 was also the year we said we would never abandon Ukraine. As Ukrainians push for accountability and healing amid the hard work of rebuilding and resilience we'll be with them every step of the way. opensocietyfoundations.org/newsroom/open-…
The year 2022 would see further triumphs against authoritarianism at the ballot box in #Chile, #Colombia, and #Brazil. In Colombia, the Constitutional Court decriminalised abortion up to 24 weeks of pregnancy - a huge victory for the global reproductive rights movement.
The Digital Services Act was announced in the EU, holding Big Tech accountable for amplifying disinformation, hate speech, and much more just in time for this website's new owner [two eyes emoji] politico.eu/article/eu-str…
Scientists in #SouthAfrica and #Senegal are working to produce vaccines for Africa—including the continent’s first mRNA shots—with implications for efforts to manage other epidemics in the region, now and in the future.
Earlier this fall we polled 21,000 people living in 22 countries to gauge public opinion on key issues facing the world today. The results show that we have more in common than one might assume. opensocietyfoundations.org/publications/f…
I could do a much longer thread on what marks progress this year but it would take more tweets than is advisable so I urge you to follow @OpenSociety - stay engaged, stay curious in this next year. But first I hope you also get to enjoy a tiny bit of rest. See you all next year!

At @OpenSociety we proudly support democracy and the rule of law. In the two years since #January6th, our team, grantees, and partners have worked to shore up democratic institutions and ensure accountability in the US and beyond.
Establishing a historic record and ensuring accountability are vital for deterring future threats. We commend the bipartisan committee for holding the former president and his advisors accountable for illegal and unethical actions following the 2020 election.
This report must be the next and not the final step to ensure accountability, and to ensure future transfers of power are not the spark for violence. The greatest threat we can offer autocrats and dictators are stronger and more inclusive democracies.
It was so energizing to come to Berlin and meet inspiring young @ONECampaign activists calling on political leaders to end this pandemic by helping to #VaccinateTheWorld. We need more people to listen to what they have to say! Please share/RT!🧵👇
.@KassandraRamey: “Most Germans can easily get their booster shot by now, but can we actually end the pandemic while that isn't the case for everyone, everywhere?”
.@ShilaBlock: “I think it is important that the voices in favour of vaccinations are making themselves heard in Germany - and not just those against them. We can only end the pandemic together.”
