1. Cognitive load matters. Communicate what truly matters. Information overload is a very real thing. Doug Lemov talks about rehearsing what you’re going to say in a given situation. Figure out what information is actually relevant and communicate only that.
2. Evaluate independent of outcome. I think the important piece is getting players to recognize the outcome doesn’t change that it was the right decision. Sometimes you do the right thing and it still goes against you.
3. The goal of offense is to score. And yet often scoring doesn’t seem to be the focus. If the goal of offense is to score, then do it as quickly and as often as possible!
4. Decision-making is a mental advantage. Which means we should probably be teaching it a bit more. Structure is important but it’s the decision-making within the structure that creates the solution.
5. What makes it the wrong decision? Sometimes players make a decision different from what we would make as the coach. That doesn't necessarily make it the wrong decision. It just means it’s different. How can we communicate through that better.
