Alcohol in indigenous communities has been problematic for as long as anyone can remember. Nor is it unique to Australia. I've seen it in Inuit communities in Canada and Greenland. #auspol 1/8
In 2012, the Gillard Labor government implemented its Stronger Futures program to help address the issue in the NT. It did not eliminate the problem but it certainly significantly reduced it to more manageable levels. #auspol 2/8
Stronger futures was a 10 year fully funded program. It expired in mid 2022 under the Morrison Liberal "government", that refused to renew it, choosing to save money by winding it up. As a direct result alcohol induced crime increased again. #auspol 3/8
By late 2022 the crime wave in Alice Springs reached crisis proportions - a direct result of the Liberal government's defunding of the program. Dutton then had the audacity to claim that the new Labor government was doing nothing to address the issue his mob created. #auspol 4/8
In the meantime, Albanese was going quietly about dealing with the situation behind the scenes, putting plans in place for a summit in Alice Springs. Dutton got wind of this and flew into the Springs ahead of Albo trying to steal his limelight #auspol 5/8
When Albo did arrive as he had always planned, the Libs then claimed he has succumbed to their pressure to act. The Murdochistas of course amplified this nonsense. Completely ignoring that it was Liberal incompetence that created the issue in the first place. #auspol 6/8
Dutton's racist QLD copper mentality also aims to paint indigenous people as violent drunks incapable of managing their own affairs - why would he give such people a #VoiceToParliament in the constitution? This is the real motivator. #auspol 7/8
The Alice Springs crime wave also takes the #RobodebtRC horror stories off the news cycle this week - just as the commission re-opened after the New Year break. The entire Liberal approach is cynical racism and diversion at work. Don't be fooled. #auspol 8/8

[A Thread] Dutton's sole motivation is to undermine @AlboMP. Whether #TheVoice is a good (or bad) thing for Australia, and in particular our First Nations People, is completely irrelevant to him. #auspol 1/4
As a result, he is undermining #theVoice through obtuse demands for more information (that's already available) to attack on Albo. His actions are not based on what is best for Australia, they are based on getting what he sees as a personal win. #auspol 2/4
The people who will suffer the most from Dutton's actions on #TheVoice are First Nation's people. On a day to day basis it will have little material impact on the rest of us. He is using them as pawns in his power plays. It's disgusting. #auspol 3/4
Both the Cookers and @liberalvictoria (yes, I know there is some crossover) failed abysmally in #VicVotes for much the same reasons. They each exist inside information bubbles/echo chambers that don't mirror reality. #auspol 1/4
Most @LiberalVictoria MPs have blocked every dissenting voice on social media. They read only Murdoch's rags, listen only to 3AW and watch only @skynewsaust and consort only with people like themselves. They believed their own BS. #auspol 2/4
The Cookers on the other hand ignore most mainstream media, they interact online via a plethora of inter-connected social media sites that all represent the same crackpot views and consort with other cookers with the same beliefs. They too believed their own BS. #auspol 3/4
[A Thread] Make no mistake. #Robodebt was rooted in Pentecostal prosperity theology, coupled with Libertarian economics. A vile combination. It was initiated by Morrison as Social Services Minister. #auspol#RobodebtRC 1/7
Expanded by Morrison as Treasurer and then handed off to fellow Pentecostal, and Morrison bestie, Stuart Robert, then Government Services Minister - who went on to vigorously defend the now illegal scheme. #auspol#RobodebtRC 2/7
Pentecostal prosperity theology suggests people who are poor or ill or unemployed because they are not Godly enough. In other words it's their own fault. And if its their own fault why should others support them? #auspol#RobodebtRC 3/7
[A Thread] Although many of us were saying it for years, @ScottMorrisonMP has been exposed both anecdotally and formally as being utterly unscrupulous and without any semblance of basic ethics or morality. His character was well-known with his @liberalaus party. #auspol 1/6
That his colleagues actually chose such an individual to be their leader is a severe indictment on @liberalaus as a political institution. If he was the best they had, how bad were the rest of them? #auspol 2/6
That the vast majority of media commentators were actually urging voters to choose Morrison over @AlboMP, a fundamentally decent man, is an indictment on them. Actions such as theirs imperil democracy. It is an abuse of our trust in them. #auspol 3/6
[A Thread] The Stock Exchange (@ASX) has very strict laws and rules regarding the timely disclosure of information that could affect share prices. These were put in place to protect shareholders' from unscrupulous Directors. #auspol 1/4
Our parliament needs similar laws. If we regard polling as akin to share pricing. Laws should force the timely disclosure of information by governments (and oppositions) that could affect voter intentions (polling). #auspol 2/4
Had such laws been in place, Morrison and his co-conspirators would not have been allowed rort the treasury and secretly usurp power as they did. And if they were to, they would now be facing significant gaol time. #auspol 3/4
[A thread] The warning flags for @LiberalAus should have gone up in Nov 2018, when the Andrews VIC Labor govt stormed through to its second term. Poor talent, religious zealotry and a lacklustre campaign by the Libs saw Andrews win in a landslide. #auspol 1/5
The Libs didn't heed the warning from VIC and doubled down on its incompetence for the WA State election in Mar 2021. As a result the McGowan WA Labor government was returned with a massive majority, leaving the Libs with only 2 seats in parliament. #auspol 2/5
In Mar 2022, the SA State election was held. The incumbent Liberal Premier was kicked out after one term. Why? Because he led a talentless divided rabble, that was being undermined by branch stacking by religious zealots...and Malinaiskas was an excellent alternative. #auspol 3/5
