UCP incompetence and secrecy continues to harm Albertans.
Here’s another example, this time food banks and $5 million dollars are involved.
In November, UCP announced the first round of food bank grants worth $5 million.
Alberta food banks are completely overwhelmed. 🧵
Two biggest food banks are in #YEG and #YYC but there are over 100 in Alberta.
Some tiny, some massive.
The Edm Food Bank distributes food to over 320 agencies & distributes 35,000 hampers per month.
Their hamper program served more than 415,660 people in 2022. 🧵
The super busy Edmonton Food Bank got $280,000 from the $5 million being given out.
Due to the insufficient help from UCP and unmanageable demand, the Edmonton Food Bank has cut their hamper program.
Here’s the letter. 🧵
On Jan. 10th I asked the minister responsible (Nixon) to share the “equation” his ministry used to distribute the food bank money.
I have heard nothing back. I asked again in Jan. 18th. No answer.
The emails.🧵
UCP cuts essential Income Supports, AISH, housing subsidies, removed rate caps, jacks up tuition causing an explosion of food bank demand & deepening poverty.
UCP cut, take away, give a bit back then expect accolades.
Albertans continue to struggle with deepening poverty.
🧵
UCP announced $10 million in new funding for Alberta food banks.
Five million is being distributed now with the two biggest food banks in Alberta getting less than 15% ($560,000).
Where is the rest of the money going and how was in determined?
🧵
Albertans deserve a government that strives to be as open and transparent as possible. The UCP appear incapable or uninterested in doing that.
An NDP government will invest and work on poverty reduction, establishing transparent goals and actions. 🧵
Someone saw my thread and let me know a letter was written to me, I just had not received it yet.
Email would have worked.
UCP announced $5 million in food bank help but it is really $3 million in direct help and $2 million to civil society agencies.
If a food bank like Edmonton gets help from the $3 million portion (food bank grant) they aren’t eligible for the $2 million portion (food security grant).
The $2 million is basically 40 x $50k grants to civil society orgs.
UCP announced they were giving out $5 million because they were taking “immediate action to put food on tables”.
A large food bank told us the UCP plan is insufficient to meet need and are cutting their hampers.
Time to re-evaluate this part of your plan and investment UCP.
Next $5 million is a matching grant that food banks and civil society orgs could apply for (closed Jan. 31st) a max of $50k based on donations from Dec 1-31, 2022 from individual donors.
Seem a little narrow, confusing and not super helpful given the scope of problems?

The UCP talks a big game about attracting investment to Alberta.
The country’s largest hydrocarbon processing region, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland, is just northeast of Edmonton, and encompasses portions of Fort Saskatchewan and Lamont, Strathcona and Sturgeon Counties.

Assoc. Min. of Natural Gas, MLA Dale Nally’s home constit of Morinville-St. Albert includes a portion of this key economic region.
What MLA Nally doesn’t seem to understand is part of attracting investment is attracting a workforce. And keeping them healthy enough to work.

Almost 2 years after the XRay machine broke down at the Morinville Clinic (Feb. 2020), AHS announced the end of XRay and Lab services in the community of 10,000, forcing people to leave their community for these vital services. There's no public transportation, many seniors.

Living on AISH means poverty. Forcing people to stretch already stressed budgets is cruel and harmful, particularly at Christmas.
This year, disabled Albertans will not receive their deposits until after Christmas.

MLAs, like many other employees, will be paid early in December. Disabled Albertans will have to wait until the new year, so the UCP could make their books look better.
