Long-term high-dose immunoglobulin successfully treats Long COVID patients with pulmonary, neurologic, and cardiologic symptoms

#longcovid 🧵

frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
Introduction: Long COVID is the overarching name for a wide variety of disorders that may follow the diagnosis of acute SARS-COVID-19 infection and persist for weeks to many months. Nearly every organ system may be affected.
Methods: We report nine patients suffering with Long COVID for 101 to 547 days. All exhibited significant perturbations of their immune systems, but only one was known to be immunodeficient prior to the studies directed at evaluating them for possible treatment.
Neurological and cardiac symptoms were most common. Based on this data and other evidence suggesting autoimmune reactivity, we planned to treat them for 3 months with long-term high-dose immunoglobulin therapy.
If there was evidence of benefit at 3 months, the regimen was continued.
Results: The patients’ ages ranged from 34 to 79 years—with five male and four female patients, respectively. All nine patients exhibited significant immune perturbations prior to treatment.
One patient declined this treatment, and insurance support was not approved for two others. The other six have been treated, and all have had a significant to remarkable clinical benefit.
Conclusion: Long-term high-dose immunoglobulin therapy is an effective therapeutic option for treating patients with Long COVID.

Preprint: Correlates of symptomatic remission among individuals with post-COVID-19 condition 🧵

“Conclusions and Relevance
A minority of individuals reported remission of PCC symptoms”

#longcovid #treatlongcovid

medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
Overall, 131/423 (31%) of those who completed a subsequent survey reported no longer being symptomatic. In Cox regression models, male gender, younger age, lesser impact of PCC symptoms at initial visit, and infection when the Omicron strain predominated were all…
statistically significantly associated with greater likelihood of remission; presence of ‘brain fog’ or shortness of breath were associated with lesser likelihood of remission.

#LongCovid is a mass disabling event happening in real time. Where are all the investigative journalists producing compelling pieces for the screen? 🧵
It’s a story of millions of people losing their once vibrant lives to a vile illness with no effective treatments or cure.

A story intertwined with an older decades long story of post-infection chronic illnesses that have been ignored with millions left abandoned and mistreated.
It’s a story of a disinterested and misinformed public.

A story of medical gaslighting and neglect.

A story of political disinterest and ignorance.

A story of denial, abuse and minimisation. Where sick people intersect with ideologues and conspiracy theorists

Excellent piece in today’s @BBCRadio4 Woman’s Hour featuring @BinitaKane who discusses #LongCovid

Hearing Dr Melissa Heightman’s (clinical lead for post-covid services at UCHL & national speciality advisor with the #LongCovid programme in @NHSEngland) responses solidified my view that we’re not going to get the help we need unless things change

#NotRecovered #treatlongcovid
“The key goal of the post-covid services is that we bring the right specialists around the person”

“That has been one of the success stories of the pathway”

“The #longcovid clinics are definitely not doing nothing”

- Dr Heightman

The cell danger response, healing cycle & chronic disease

An interesting talk by Dr Robert Naviaux. See 🧵 for more

#Autism #MECFS #LongCovid #mitochondria

Suramin, according to Naviaux is the first in a new class of drugs that could be used to test the cell danger response. A small pilot study in #Autism was successful. Naviaux believes it could help people with #MECFS too…

When a poorly run study erroneously concludes that #LongCovid mostly resolves in a year the media jumps on it within hours. Yet when the most comprehensive and accurate review of long covid to date paints a much more sobering picture the media is silent
Here is the review that no major global news outlets have picked up on yet:

One year ago today I woke up feeling absolutely dreadful. I’d gone for a 5k run the day before and little did I know that it would precipitate the debilitating #LongCovid that I’ve endured for the last year. I haven’t had ONE good day since then. 1/2
I’ve been either stuck in bed or at home with crushing symptoms. I’ve been diagnosed with #POTS meaning I can barely stand up. 2022 has been an awful year. But the #LongCovid and #MECFS Twitter community has been amazing. We all deserve a better 2023! 2/2

#LongCovid is impacting the lives of >2 million people in the UK. Many have had their lives completely ruined and more are being affected every day. We need help
