On this day 9 years ago Russia has begun its aggression against Ukraine. In this thread, we remind how the situation developed in 2014, before the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022 🧵
On February 20, 2014, Russia started a pre-planned military aggression against Ukraine with the occupation of Crimea. This is when vehicles and armed military servicemen with no identification marks appeared on the peninsula, forming military units under Russian command 2/
After the illegal referendum in Crimea on March 16, Putin declared the "joining" of Crimea to Russia. Later that spring, Russian formations crossed into Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv oblasts of Ukraine, capturing buildings of local authorities, police and military facilities 3/
On February 20, Ukraine marks the Day of the Heroes of the Heavenly Hundred, commemorating the heroism of participants in the Revolution of Dignity. In this thread, read about who these people are and why Ukrainians honour their memory. 🧵

Some foreign media unwittingly or deliberately amplify Russian propaganda with inaccurate wording. Mistakes do happen, but in times of war, they might be extremely costly, so extra caution is needed. Below, we show the cases of misleading phrasing and the possible consequences🧵
❌Case 1: Since 2014, foreign media have been using misleading terms, such as “breakaway regions,” regarding the occupied by Russia Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, thus largely downplaying or straight-up negating the Russian involvement.
❌Case 2: While Russia resorts to overt lies when discussing its invasion of Ukraine, some foreign media take Russian statements at face value, presenting those without properly challenging them.
