Reminder - before I get cranky tomorrow - International Women's Day is a UN initiative and this year theme is:

"Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future".

The site that comes up & often quoted by corporates is NOT who you should heed.
If you see International Women's Day #IWD2023 stuff and it is using a hashtag about "embracing equality" it is from the spiv corporate hijack site, not the official UN site, please don't reward them ☹️

#CrackingTheCode
unwomen.org.au/get-involved/i…
And... we wake up to people yet again using the Corporate spiv site that Google ranks higher than the UN site for #IWD2023 🙁

This from 2020 explains the Corporate spiv site - again I beg you, don't reward it 🙏smh.com.au/lifestyle/life…
According to their own site, Aurora Venture’s aim is to “help drive a more female friendly angle to their [clients’] brands.” Rosa Campbell #IWD2023 #CrackingTheCode novaramedia.com/2020/03/07/int…
"...a site run by a privately held company named Aurora Ventures. It’s important to note that this website has no affiliation with the UN Women’s IWD."

@WorldVision is a massive organisation that should know better than to use the hashtag of a Corporate website instead of the @UN_Women 😡

Sad to see the lack of due diligence here, expect better from such a large organisation 🙁
#IWD2023 #CrackingTheCode Image
Oh and more perverse considering World Vision have chosen to use the Corporate spiv IWD instead of the official UN Women's one, they obviously are not so big on 'Embracing Equity'? 🤔
#IWD2023 #CrackingTheCode
I get #IWD2023 theme as it really matters in so many ways:

Cracking the Code: Innovation for a gender equal future

Maybe it would behoove people to look at Google when it comes to #CrackingTheCode 🤔

unwomen.org.au/australian-pol…
A big reason why so many use the incorrect #IWD2023 hashtag and are influenced by the "Corporate" site is because it comes up first in Google.

As we know from from #WomenInSport Google is NOT always accurate. Have a look at #CorrectTheInternet
#CorrectTheInternet aims to get rid of male bias in Search Engines. If you ask the question, "who has scored the most goals in football?" it will automatically tell you the "man", when in fact is a woman who has that record.
#IWD2023 #CrackingTheCode
So... just because something comes up first in Google, doesn't make it accurate.

If you see people rewarding the Corporate spiv site using their Hashtag #EmbraceEquityMyArse 🙄 instead of UN Women's one, please call it out 🙏

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
"The Australian theme for #IWD2023 is #CrackingTheCode: Innovation for a gender equal future, focusing on innovation as a key driver of systemic change required to achieve gender equality."

A really timely theme considering how much technology is a part of our lives.
#IWD2023 #CrackingTheCode aim:
1. Close all gaps in digital access and skills
2. Support women and girls in STEM
3. Create tech that meets the needs of women and girls
4. Address technology-facilitated gender-based violence
unwomen.org.au/power-on-how-w…
If your corporate cupcake #IWD2023 event is not addressing the #CrackingTheCode issues in my previous tweet then it is really indicative as to:

Why women need better IT knowledge so not conned by a spiv corporate site

and

How women are being used for 'marketing'.
"It’s an example of what happens when we allow important movements to be turned into corporate, commercial opportunities."

There is nothing more depressing than waking up on #IWD to see 'reputable' organisations actively promoting a London based 'corporate' site just because it came up first in Google, instead of the UN official ☹️
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
Don't care if White Corporate Feminist Barbies use a site that has corporatised a social cause as let's face it, that is on brand for them.

I do however have an issue with 'reputable' orgs' people trust doing it 🙁
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
projectf.com.au/the-f-word-blo…
UN WOMEN’S THEME FOR 2023 IS ‘CRACKING THE CODE: INNOVATION FOR A GENDER-EQUAL FUTURE’.

UN Women assists to lift women all over the world. In fact today are fundraising to assist women & girls excluded from the digital world. charidy.com/unwomenau

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
SIGH! and another 'reputable' organisation @SwimmingAUS promoting the London based corporatisation of a social cause instead of the UN Women's site ☹️ I assume just because it came up first in google 😫

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet

And another 'organisation' where the comms staff obviously just took the first thing that came up in Google as legit ☹️

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
Another 'organisation' with great message mind you, sadly ruined by using 'corporate' site that came up first in google instead of UN Women's. Particularly frustrating considering #WomenInSport are trying to #CorrectTheInternet

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Sorry @VolunteeringQld but the #IWD2023 theme is not Embrace Equity that is the slogan from the corporate site that comes up first in google.

@UNWomenAust is #CrackingTheCode: Innovation for a gender equal future.

#CorrectTheInternet

This thread is getting quite long now, note I'm only caring about 'organisations' that 'do good' as disappointing to see them getting conned by corporatisation of a social cause 🙁

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
projectf.com.au/the-f-word-blo…
It really is perverse that the #IWD2023 theme is:
#CrackingTheCode: Innovation for a gender equal future, when you see so many reputable orgs using the first entry in google conning them into thinking it is legit 🙁

Really illustrates how important the @UNWomenAust theme is! Image
I know I am banging my head against a brick wall here, but loving #WomenInSport and always seeing default being men's sport coz of a digital bias ie Google being incorrect, which has led to #CorrectTheInternet initiative happening with #IWD2023 as well really frustrates me.
This below is really important much more so for women and girls than a corporate throw-away line of 'embrace equality'!

It is an issue women and girls around the world face every day!
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
This below is particularly salient today when seeing so many orgs go with 'first thing entry in Google' with a bias to a 'corporate' site instead of the UN Women's site and spreading corporatisation of a social issue further 😫
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Good to see Australian Government departments have not been led astray, well, would hope the esafety office of all places would not be conned by first entry in Google 😳😊
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode: Innovation for a gender equal future.
Oh so very disappointed in this. @NetballNSW has been awesome over the years in regard to advancing women and girls and so sad to see comms conned by '1st in google' corporatisation 😫
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
@NSWSwifts did this wonderful - and important - video 😍 Not the first time they have been forward thinking in advancing women & girls 👏
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
Good piece below as to how search engines fail #WomenInSport 🙁 but as we have discovered also fail women in general with so many using the incorrect #IWD2023 theme.
#CrackingTheCode
#CorrectTheInternet
YAY! Love seeing #WomenInSport orgs getting it right 🤩

These women really are the epitome of "If you can see it you can be it" 😍

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Yeah... look I know the corporate throw-away line supports your political agenda here but is not what #IWD2023 theme is.

In fact, would be smart of you to capitalise on avenues of 'real' theme being #CrackingTheCode: Innovation for a gender equal future.
Anywho... Back to @UNWomenAust #IWD2023 😊

If you can afford it, please consider donating to this initiative as will help lift so many women world wide 🙏
#CrackingTheCode
I know it is lovely to see so many women lauded on #IWD2023 and they should be, in fact, should be lauded every single day, just as men in media area, shame we need this day to recognise.
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
As a reminder, only just this past Sunday the regular #WomenInSport sports media splashes count resulted in a lousy 14.31% representation out of 27 online sports back pages 😡

We have a very long way to go.
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
So don't get me wrong, I love seeing so many women in our media getting a moment to shine this #IWD2023 👍

However there is a heap of things you can do to honour the #CrackingTheCode theme. It is all about access to the most basic of technologies most take for granted.
Side note, looking for a gif for above tweet, just put in 'phone' in gifs and twitter gave me a heap of men, dogs, animals etc., but had to scroll way down before I got a gif with a woman 🙄

A perfect example of the bias against women in technology.
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
I've given Google a bit of a nudge in this #IWD2023 thread today but there is some good news. Until today if you put NRLW or AFLW into their search engine, it showed you the mens version of the game 😡 now, showing what you asked for 👍
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode ImageImage
You might not think it matters much but it does with AI becoming more prolific, it really matters.

Even before AI the default for search engines, well software in general, has always been male. As AI is learning from the internet, this is not good ☹️
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
As the saying goes in those who work on databases "shit in, shit out"!

Which means if all the data is set to limit women and girls achievements, information etc., AI will only compound that, making #CrackingTheCode extremely relevant this #IWD2023 🙁
Every aspect of our lives is affected nowadays by code, science, technology. Yet women only make up 21% of tertiary graduates with STEM-related degrees in Australia, so not even any women there at the coal face to raise the issue ☹️
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode Image
Another really important issue is safety!

It is really hard to find a woman who has not suffered abuse online. It is nearly always gendered.

Misogynistic and sometimes violent abusive language is too commonplace. We need people - and tech systems - to be better. Image
It doesn't cost anything but a bit of time #CrackingTheCode on this gendered abuse online.

If you see it, call it out!
Report it!
Block it!
Don't follow people who can't criticise/debate without resorting to misogynistic language.

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Also... if you know the person who has been abused, publicly support them, check they are OK, assure them they are not alone and there are people who care.

For a platform with millions of people, it can be very lonely when you are attacked 🙁

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Phones, phones are another part of technology that we can't do without nowadays. Hell! As we have found from #RoboDebtRC you couldn't even contact the Govt without one.

They are lifelines for many women, particularly those subject to domestic abuse.
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
If you can afford it? Next time you are upgrading your phone, drop in your old - working - phone to your closest Women's shelter.

Or there are places in each state that refurb phones for DV orgs 🙏

#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
abc.net.au/news/2021-10-1…
Homelessness is also rising at a rapid rate. The biggest rise is in women over 50. This is another area where you could donate your old phone when upgrading to a new one.

Phones are a life line and it is the most vulnerable hurt when they can't access.
#IWD2023
#CrackingTheCode
Same with Computers, laptops, tablets...

If you can afford it, don't just trade in or throw away.

Donate them to a women's shelter.

You have no idea how much that laptop could change a woman - or her kids - life?

Seriously good seeing a Parliament on the same page in regard to women. No games from either Premier Palaszczuk or Opposition Leader Crisafulli.

Who knew the adults in the room when it came to Parliament would be in Queensland 😳👏🏼
Really good to hear Cameron Dick (ALP) putting it all on men, it being a men's problem, a problem for men to fix, for men to demand better of other men.

David Janetzki (LNP) talking about #EnoughIsEnough talking about true cry for national action.

#BeyondPolitics
Shannon Fentiman (ALP) thanking women who came out to #March4Justice hearing & believing, angry about lack of respect for women by our Leaders. Mentions 'Women's Safety & Justice Taskforce'.

This piece from 2011 by Jay Rosen is really interesting in light of attitude of many punter to many News Corp journos losing job yesterday.

I see many journalists blaming punters or treating them with disdain for not supporting them, maybe look at why? abc.net.au/news/2011-08-3…
We really do need journalists. The average person doesn't have same access to find out what Government is doing.

Journalists need support of people when under siege from a government that does not want any accountability or transparency and makes their job impossible to do.
Yelling at punters for not supporting them or not caring about their #RightToKnow or #FreedomOfThePress campaigns just increases the amount of people who have disdain for the profession and worse, increases the lack of trust.

Good morning sportsfans, except @theheraldsun subs 🔽 you can get in the bin 😞

Happy fathers day to all the dads out there, except Peter Dutton terrorising #HomeToBilo little girls 🤬

Let's see what our #BallsOnly sports media has in store for #WomenInSport this Sunday...
Pretty crap* start with #BallsOnly @brisbanetimes Sunday sports splash 1/5 #WomenInSport

1. Horror week as another female jockey dies following race fall brisbanetimes.com.au/sport/racing/h…

HER NAME IS "Melanie Tyndall" RIP 😢

and the 'other' female Jockey was "Mikaela Claridge" RIP 😢
Oh another aside with the @brisbanetimes Sunday sports splash, it is the other major Queensland news media outlet and NO mention at all of Sunshine Coast Lightning win.

Only going to Grand Final 3rd year in a row, no biggy 🙄

This is how likes of Courier Mail spreads their misleading articles further.

Exhibit A. Todays front page:

"Worker who put Shorten on spot over tax cuts for high-income earners suspended by employer"
Obviously the inference is this poor bugger asked an inconvenient question and has now been punted for it.

What pressure did Bill/ALP/Unions put on this 'experienced electrical engineer' for having the temerity to hold Bill Shorten to account. UGH!
When you look at the actual full piece:

The worker, who had earned about $250,000 last financial year, forgot his lunch that day and got caught up in the media scrum during a free barbecue.

hmmm easy in a busy port to just 'wander' into a political circus coz hungry? 🤔

Bullshit! I am not buying this denial.

A. Lenore Taylor is a bloody good journalist & would not report without due diligence.

B. Morrison & co have shown by their words & actions over the years they love the race-baiting as an election strategy.

thenewdaily.com.au/news/national/…
The government is just now realising that all the mainstreaming of hate they have done over the years is coming back to bite them in the arse.

Let's face it, these pricks wanted a terror attack, just not the one they got.
They are also betting on the fact that so many in our press gallery still follow that bullshit line of "well if the Minister says... we have to take him at his word..."

We all know how often these pricks have lied, not obfuscated, but LIED!
