Do you know #elephant family is all women group. Made of #mother, #aunts, #grandmother & all other #ladies. Most of the times Male leave herd early. Kids are looked by all female elephants in herd not only mother. Most experienced female makes all decision for family. #WomensDay
Obvious that experienced matriarch should lead #elephant family. She has accumulated immense traits/wisdom due to her long life. Which comes handy in long journeys & dangers. So when matriarch dies of some accident, the herd is directionless for some time.
Males keep on joining & leaving herds. Well one of the accepted theory is. That males when they get young are pushed out from the herd/family by dominant female, also called as matriarch. To check the inbreeding. Which only shows elephants are highly intelligent.
They say it takes a village to raise a kid. These ladies of the herd took it seriously. Protecting the calves and teaching them is responsibility of all the female members of the herd.
They are long ranging animals, keep walking. The matriarch or most experienced lady in the herd knows all water holes, villages & good habitats. She leads the family through the landscape for hundreds of kilometers. She takes them on a journey called as life.
In that process they spread seeds all over the landscape & help in regeneration. I had privilege to look after an elephant reserve, all I can say is; #forest walk with the #elephants. All pics are mine collected during last few years.

This beauty. Let’s see who can guess the species. Image
King Cobra; Ophiophagus hannah.

“Ophiophagus” is derived from Greek, meaning “snake-eating” and hannah is derived from the name of tree-dwelling nymphs in Greek mythology.

The snake whose 100% diet is other big snakes. Here old click of mine, king eating a spectacled cobra. Image
They are massive snakes with huge amount of venom. Only snakes in world which build nests. They don’t like human presence so avoid us.

Evolution made them somewhat resistant to toxic venom of other snakes. Their favourites are rat snakes.

When #Cheetah are coming back to #India. A look at how the last of the lots were hunted, maimed and domesticated for hunting parties. Video made in 1939. 1/n
Historical record suggests cheetah were in least conflict with humans. Rather they were domesticated and used by hunting parties widely. Even some used to call them ‘hunting leopards’. 2/n
Not only cheetah but most of the charismatic animals were hunted in those days by kings and britishers. Until the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 was passed it was very late. Cheetah were already extinct from India. Footage is archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd. 3/3

Those egrets are having fun so as that male elephant. Classic case of commensalism in forest. Image
Commensalism is an interaction between species where one species gets benefitted from interaction and another gains no benefit/loss.

Big animals say cattle, bison, sambar during their movement stir up and flush out insects from the vegetation which then are consumed by egrets. Image
It is in contrast to mutualism. Where both the species get benefitted.

At times when one species remove harmful insects from the body of the host. Image
