JEWISH EXPERT TAKES A STAND AGAINST ATTEMPTS TO FALSELY DEPICT BULGARIAN "TSAR" BORIS III AS "SAVIOR" OF JEWS DURING THE HOLOCAUST

Solomon Bali, an expert on anti-Semitism and radicalism and member of the international Jewish organization B'nai B'rith,

has publicly objected to Bulgaria's attempts to portray Bulgarian King Boris III as a "savior" of Jews during the Second World War. Bali told Bulgaria's TV1 that Jews in Bulgaria were not saved during the Holocaust

but "survived after their postponed deportation" to the Nazi death camps.

In his role as head of the Bulgarian state at the time, Boris III was responsible for the deporting - and the death -

of 11,343 Jews from the territory of occupied Macedonia and Thrace to the Nazi death camps throughout Europe.

The so-called "tsar" had previously signed, i.e. approved, the Bulgarian Nazi-fascist and anti-Semitic Law for the Protection of the Nation in 1941.

While Boris III died in 1943, many Bulgarians have been trying to rehabilitate him despite his role in the Holocaust and for his leadership of Bulgaria as a member of the Axis powers.

- "If they had a single document that proves the desire of Boris III and the people around him to protect the Jewry, they would have shown it in the past 80 years. I am convinced that if Boris III lived to see the end of the Second World War,

he would have been tried as a war criminal - and not only because he sent 11,343 people to death, of which, it must be emphasized that 4,000 were children, but also for the war crimes committed by the Bulgarian occupational corps in Macedonia and in today's Greece," Bali said.

Bali also said he views with awe Sofia's attempts to erase the inscriptions "Bulgarian fascist occupiers" on placards on monuments commemorating the victims of the Second World War in Macedonia but does not raise issues with such placards in Greece.

- "I am very surprised by the pickiness in raising this issue because 'Bulgarian fascist occupiers' is also inscribed on the monuments to the victims of the crimes by Bulgaria's occupational authorities in Greece.

It is interesting that nobody in Bulgaria has a problem with that," Bali added.

As a reminder, about 20 years ago in Israel, at the so-called "Bulgarian forrest," the monument dedicated to Boris III was removed, at the request of the Jews of Macedonia and Thrace.
