1/9. 🌀Devastating tropical #CycloneFreddy, which has made landfall twice 🤯, has caused #LossAndDamage in #Madagascar🇲🇬, #Mozambique 🇲🇿 and #Maliwi 🇲🇼 including 220+ deaths, whilst breaking records as the longest lasting cyclone. Cyclone Freddy as it weakens over Mozambique following its s
2/9. In #Madagascar🇲🇬, at least 17 people have died due to #CycloneFreddy (7 from the first landfall on 21 February and 10 from the latest rains on 5 and 6 March), and nearly 299,000 people have affected.
3/9. In #Mozambique 🇲🇿, #CycloneFreddy has seen some provinces received as much rain in 24 hours as they would usually experience in one month. As a result 10 people have died and 14 have been injured, 1,900 houses have been damaged or destroyed.
4/9. In #Maliwi 🇲🇼, #CycloneFreddy has led to the loss of at least 111 people have lost their lives and some 19,000 people have been displaced in the hardest-hit districts and and nearly 299,000 people have been affected. 📼@juliusngoma
5/9. With the #ClimateCrisis making extreme weather events like #CycloneFreddy increasingly more intense and frequent, #LossAndDamage will continue to escalate as adaptation measures fail or are not able to be implemented.
6/9. Whilst #COP27's historic agreement to establish a #LossAndDamage Fund is much needed good news, the Fund is empty and yet to start working leaving impacted communities and to pay for the cost of rebuilding.
7/9. With the first meeting of the Transitional Committee of the #LossAndDamage Fund being held from the 27-29th of March in #Luxor, #Egypt 🇪🇬, Parties must focus on designing a fit-for-purpose #LossAndDamage Fund that gets to work urgently to address #LossAndDamage.

1/11.⚡️BREAKING NEWS⚡️: The fifth meeting (#TC5) of the Transitional Committee (TC) of the #LossAndDamage Fund has agreed on recommendations to send to #COP28. However, the US 🇺🇸 says “it is not a consensus document” because they were not in the room when it was adopted. Image
2/11. The US 🇺🇸stood as the only TC member blocking consensus by asking for last-minute changes to the text when all other TC members had agreed to the “imperfect text”. Having blocked adoption several times, the US left the room when Co-Chairs called for the final time to adopt. Image
3/11. Following the close of #TC5 the US 🇺🇸 interjected to reject the consensus decision claiming “it is not a consensus document” because they did not provide consent. The Co-Chairs say that they will now reflect that “in the view of the US” it is not a consensus document. Image

1/10.📢It is day two of the fifth meeting (#TC5) of the Transitional Committee (TC) of the #LossAndDamage Fund in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates 🇦🇪. The new text for the #LossAndDamage Fund is out and it is totally ⛔️ unacceptable!

2/10. Why is it unacceptable?

1⃣ The text sees @WorldBank become the interim host of the #LossAndDamage Fund without a clear exit. (Developing countries have been clear, they will only accept the @WorldBank as an interim host with a set of conditions and not forever!). Image
3/10. 2⃣No clear obligation for developed countries to pay their fair share into the #LossAndDamage Fund.
