By @EricCheungwc: "If anything, say experts like Tibusungu ‘e Vayayana, a professor in Indigenous studies at National Taiwan Normal University, #Taiwan society now views Indigenous communities as a bulwark against #Beijing’s territorial ambitions." edition.cnn.com/2023/03/18/asi…
"The idea is relatively simple: What better way to demonstrate to the international community Taiwan’s distinct identity, its separateness to mainland China, than the existence of native populations stretching back thousands of years, they say."
"The idea is relatively simple: What better way to demonstrate to the international community Taiwan’s distinct identity, its separateness to mainland China, than the existence of native populations stretching back thousands of years, they say."
“To highlight the uniqueness of Taiwan from China, the ethnic Han population in Taiwan are now emphasizing Indigenous cultures and are paying more and more attention to it,” Vayayana said.
"Ku Heng-chan, a research fellow in Indigenous studies at Taiwan’s Academia Sinica, said a turning point in the mindset of mainstream society came in the 1970s, when large-scale pro-democracy protests broke out."
“The pro-democracy movement was fighting against the Nationalist Chinese regime (in Taipei), and they wanted to look for distinct characteristics that represented the Taiwanese identity,” Ku said.
“Of course, Taiwan’s Indigenous groups gave it the most legitimacy, and so it also gave rise to subsequent Indigenous rights movements in the 1980s.”
"Alongside this growing recognition of its Indigenous population came increasing efforts at reconciliation by the government, which culminated in in Taipei’s first formal apology to the Indigenous communities in 2016."
“For 400 years, every regime that has come to Taiwan has brutally violated the rights of Indigenous peoples through armed invasion and land seizure,” said President Tsai Ing-wen in a public address. “For this, I apologize to the Indigenous peoples on behalf of the government.”

My latest: As Xi Jinping begins his three-day trip to Russia, all eyes will be on whether #China will change its stance on the #Ukraine war. I talked to @vtchakarova, @Shilinabolan, @UCerenkova, and @ajwsmall about what to expect from the trip:dw.com/en/xi-sets-off…
Beijing has characterized the trip as "a visit for peace" that will aim to "improve global governance" and contribute to "the development and progress of the world.”
Xi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in person while also holding a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Russia said the two leaders would talk about the further development of their partnership and ...

"Ayup, who obtained information about Rozi through various channels, said officers from the Igerchi police station in Aksu city took Rozi out of a prison that operates under the auspices of the Xinjiang Construction and Production Company."

"The U.S. is trying to head off a potential proposal from #Beijing for a cease-fire in Ukraine ahead of a Russia-#China summit, saying suspending fighting now would help solidify Russia’s hold on Ukrainian territory." wsj.com/articles/u-s-s…
"The White House expressed concern Friday about China’s deepening ties with Russia during the Ukraine war. That makes a potential call for a cease-fire a one-sided proposal to Russia’s benefit, said John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council."
“A cease-fire now is again effectively the ratification of Russian conquest,” Mr. Kirby said at a news briefing. Such a move, he said, would recognize Russia’s territorial gains and occupation of Ukrainian territory ...
