Today we honor a brilliant scientist & my dear friend, Mario Molina. Mario was a tireless advocate for controls on #CFCs that destroy the ozone layer. He also took on the #climatecrisis by helping strengthen the #MontrealProtocol to explicitly focus on climate protection. #Google
To his last day, Mario Molina worked to mitigate the existential threat of #climatechange. In his last Op-Ed, he laid out the 10yr sprint to promote fast climate action. This may be our only way to keep the planet relatively safe along the way to net zero. project-syndicate.org/commentary/arc…
Mario left us suddenly with unfinished work. But he laid down the tracks that showed us how we might still slow warming quickly enough to avoid existential chaos. It’s up to all those he inspired to carry on his work. And damn sure we will, but it’s not as fun without our friend.

🧵All COPs are disappointing; they never do enough to slow warming to keep the planet and its people safe. Year after year, COPs show the power of the fossil fuel industry and its cruel indifference to the planetary suffering it is causing & the climate chaos it will soon unleash
But if you look hard enough, it’s possible to see several positive outcomes from #COP27 . This COP made important progress on several key fronts, inc holding the line on 1.5°C & noting tipping points incl in the cryosphere. linkedin.com/pulse/positive…
#COP27 also made progress on #methane, mostly outside the COP: 150 countries plus the EU are now part of the #GlobalMethanePledge, including vulnerable islands & other states
