The mayor of Bogotá @ClaudiaLopez intends to authorize the displacement of a remnant of the Muisca community residing in Tunjuelito, a southern district of the city, from their ancestral land. SR condemns this violation of rights & colonial state policy. 📷 @cej_juvenil (1/18)
The Muisca community of Tunjuelito is part of the Experimental Youth Center @cej_juvenil which is dedicated to the perpetuation of the Muisca culture and the protection of the Tunjo wetland complexes that are crucial biodiversity hotspots in the city. (2/18)
This expropriation is a danger for the preservation of the wetlands and the continuation of a violent marginalization of the Muisca which has been going on for 500+ years. @cej_juvenil represents a popular, communitarian, environmental and cultural root for the community. (3/18)
In the words of its governor @camaleoncromo: "We are 16 families directly affected as a community, but this is more than people, it is a permanent promotion work with universities, schools, community processes, in our Youth Experimental Center, our house. (4/18)
On weekends, more than 50 people gather to sow, to look for medicine, both physical and spiritual". (5/18)
What's the worth of your promises against corruption during your campaign @ClaudiaLopez, if you now take part in the destruction of the environment & cultural heritage of the Muisca? How could we thank you @ClaudiaLopez for the terrible service delivered to your community? (6/18)
Is this what @NorthwesternU taught @ClaudiaLopez to be a "political process of democratization bringing power and legitimacy evenly within the territory", mentioned in her PhD thesis? (7/18)
Global North universities like @NorthwesternU bear a responsibility in exporting neocolonial politics to the Global South, teaching their students such as @ClaudiaLopez to shape the land & culture for capitalists. (8/18)
The culture and traditions of Muisca living in cities have already been highly affected by urbanization, which significantly changed the physical space and disrupted the relationship with their ancestral territory (doi.org/10.17645/up.v5…). (11/18)
The Muisca suffered centuries of marginalization & displacement since the Spanish invasion. In mid-16th century, Spanish Kingdom colonized their land destroying a thriving, culturally rich and self-sufficient confederation, and decimating a population. (12/18)
Colonizers stole their resources, destroyed their land with extractivism, banned their culture, evangelized and enslaved the population, and turned the main pillar of their economy, agriculture, into a western intensive model. (13/18)
The Spanish Kingdom stole and rewrote the story of 'El Dorado', which was a cultural ceremony of the Muisca Peoples and became a term referring to a place full of gold and precious stones. (14/18)
After the independence of Colombia, the Muisca community kept being discriminated against and still fights against the invisibilization of its culture, for example through the publication of the Suati Magazine, honoring Muisca literature. (15/18)
The Muisca Peoples are also at the forefront of the protection of the environment, the land having a central place in their culture not only for its natural resources but also for its cultural significance, including the history it holds (doi.org/10.17645/up.v5…). (16/18)
@cej_juvenil is asking for international help to prevent the expropriation of the land they have been taking care of for 20 years. No more forced displacement of defenders of the land in Colombia. SR stands in solidarity with the Muisca community of Bogotá. ✊ 🇨🇴 (17/18)
The latest IPCC report summarises five years of studies on global temperature rises, fossil fuel emissions, and climate impacts. It warns that many parts of the planet will become unlivable, emphasising the shrinking window of opportunity to secure a sustainable future. (1/4)
The report acknowledges that limiting global warming to 2°C is critical. However, an overshoot of the 1.5°C target is likely in the 2030s. Despite these alarming findings, political leaders have yet to take sufficient action. (2/4)
Fossil fuel companies continue to expand operations to keep up with demand, outpacing the energy transition we urgently need. It is imperative that we shift our focus to reducing our energy consumption, prioritising equitable economic development over perpetual growth. (3/4)

Scientist Rebellion founding action: UK Crown court jury finds co-founders Mike and Tim **Not Guilty** for their action at the @royalsociety! More on this news tomorrow. #scienceontrial#ClimateEmergency
In September 2020, Scientist Rebellion co-founders Mike and Tim took non-violent direct action at the UK's most prominent scientific body: The Royal Society @royalsociety
The legal defense of "consent" was used - that given a true understanding of ecological breakdown and climate crisis, and the power of social movements and civil disobedience to bring rapid change, members of the Royal Society would consent to the non-violent direct action. #NVDA
Activists from SR Africa took action in different countries to demand climate action, specifically 1) to halt new oil & gas projects across the continent, 2) invest in clean energy systems, 3) pay up for losses in ecosystems & culture due to extractivism. ✊ #LossAndDamage (1/13)
This campaign happens in the midst of the development of major oil and gas projects in Africa, such as @EACOP_ and the Morroco-Nigeria pipeline. ☠️ (2/13)
The 'Morocco-Nigeria pipeline' is an extension of the West African Pipeline that would make it the world's longest offshore gas pipeline. It will cost about $25 billion dollars which could be invested in clean energy instead of fueling the #ClimateCrisis, (3/13)
As a broad alliance we announce actions around the village of Lützerath, in Germany, because the coal under Lützerath must stay in the ground! We stand united behind the activists on site and fight side by side for climate justice worldwide.
Together we call for all activists to make their way to Lützerath to protect the village from eviction.
Every minute the excavator runs and coal is burned, the climate catastrophe continues to heat up. As the Lützerath Unräumbar alliance, we stand in the way of destruction!
We are groups from Fridays For Future to Last Generation to Alle Dörfer Bleiben. We call on everyone to become active with us for climate justice. Our name is program: with diverse actions of civil disobedience, we make Lützerath unräumbar.
A new paper shows that mature trees and woodlands are crucial in locking away carbon. Cutting edge laser scanning suggests previous estimates of carbon storage in woodlands could be significantly underestimated. (1/4) #CarbonCapture#Forests

Forests with older, larger trees appear to be especially effective at storing carbon. Scientists warn that "The value you have in large mature trees is almost incalculable, and so you should avoid losing that at any cost." (2/4) #ClimateChange#Trees
Politicians support the 'One Trillion Trees' campaign and advocate large scale planting programmes. However, new planting initiatives are of limited use in comparison to protecting existing forests. Monoculture planting can negatively impact biodiversity. (3/4) #SustainableForest
Meet our activists in Colombia! The collective @ciencia_local is our sister group in Colombia.
In November 2022 they held actions in Bogota and Casanare, calling for the release of our activists imprisoned in Germany and denouncing the lies and deceit of politicians at #COP27.
Voice of Colombia: "Politicians have to accept that political power is useless in the face of the climate crisis, only if scientific criteria are taken into account in the decisions of the states, it is possible to improve the future of humanity".
More than 200 environmental activists were murdered in Colombia in 2022. A dramatic reality in the global south: The voices of activists are silenced by threats, persecution and death. But this situation does not stop climate activism, because the emergency transcends generations
