Over the past week, jumped with joy several times at the ways in which #BEEFNetflix beautifully understood and portrayed the nuances of underlying rage, Korean men rage, shame, assimilation, Korean church culture, talking to your inner child, self-acceptance..1/
..class divides, socio-economic divides, Orientalism, kindred spirits, trauma bonding, family codependency, honor/shame culture, religiosity, and mental health. Many of us were planning IG Lives, streaming, podcasts, talks and furiously group texting each other. 2/
Then, the conversation shifted. Instead of focusing on all the amazing richness in each of the ten 30-minute episodes, it was overshadowed, then overpowered by the recirculation of David Choe’s 2014 podcast episode where he casually bragged about sexually assaulting a masseuse 3/
Choe later replied that he made up the story, was not mentally well at the time, and apologized. He said that he spent time in mental health facilities and was dedicated to helping others. He took responsibility for his words and owned them. 4/
The masseuse (he said she was biracial black) never came forward, so we don’t know if the story was true or not, or even if there was a masseuse at all. No one else has come forward to corroborate his story or accused him of additional sexual misconduct. 5/
There’s been no documented evidence of his support and dedication to helping others. He tried to take the podcast down. He tried scrubbing his history. He defended his art. This doesn’t look good. 6/
Now, the conversation about #BEEFNetflix has turned into Koreans and anti-Black racism, misogynoir, violence against women, violence against black women, sexual assault, complicity, accountability, bro culture, white rich bro culture assimilation. 7/
I wouldn’t be surprised if David Choe made the whole thing up just to fit into bro culture and getting paid handsomely for it (in the 10’s of millions). I also wouldn’t be surprised if he actually did the things he said, and even more. 8/
What I do know is that this man’s actions and words have overshadowed this brilliant show called #Beef , one with beautiful acting and complicated scenes that was binge worthy and deep dive discussion-worthy. 9/
David Choe is a Korean American man & I’m married to one and raising two. There are fewer degrees of separation between Korean Americans in the States, & because of that we are inextricably connected to each other in ways that refuse the full blown cancellation of each other. 10/
But it's because of this connection that I am deeply disappointed and grieved by his actions, past and present. I grieve the propagation of misogynoir and sexual violence, even if it was a fantasy.

And it's because of this that I wont' be offering any commentary on #BEEFNetflix

On this day in 1942, Japanese Americans were mass incarcerated and corralled into race track stables via FDR's #ExecutiveOrder9066.

The reasoning? They thought all Japanese Americans (living in America) were responsible for Japan's actions during WWII. 1/
#Executiveorder9066 was suspended almost 3 years later, at the end of 1944. The order wasn't officially terminated until 1976. People lost property, jobs, and businesses. They returned to only a fraction of what they had before. 2/
A commission to study the executive order found that there was no justification to this horrible act.

And in 1989, Bush issued bill payments, redress and apologies to the formerly mass incarcerated. That's right, REPARATIONS. 3/

Reflecting on the continued feeling of a perpetual foreigner. My kids are the only Asians in their grades. They told me last night that kids all around them use racial slurs against Asians so much that even they don't feel like it's a big deal anymore. 1/
I talked with them about the decisions they can make when they hear such things directed at them or yelled out randomly. I told them that #1: It's not ok when ppl use racial slurs ("ching chong," etc) at any time, at any point, even if they're having fun.
#2: When you hear someone yelling a racial slur, you have a choice. If you decide to confront them, make sure you you're in a safe place. Make sure there's an allied teacher or maybe some ally friends, and that they're ACTUALLY allies.

Hey everyone, I want to share something with you.
For years, I've been silent about Chris Heuertz, one of the main spiritual #enneagram authors. He's published 2 books about it. 1/
In 2020, 33 people came forward to expose Chris for spiritual abuse, especially young women of color. There was a formula for his abuse and everything bit.ly/3TYkzvZ 2/
Many people co-signed, @BreneBrown removed her endorsement of Chris, & several actions were taken by #Enneagram leaders, publishers, and orgs. But Chris released a statement of apology, claiming nothing physical happened w/women, except for in 2012. 3/

As a worship leader/speaker in many different Christian conferences, I’ve noticed that across most of them, attendance is down. Evangelicals, Mainline, EXvangelicals, progressive, social justice, etc.

Translated: Gatherings cannot look the same as they once were. 1/
The fancy headliners, cool bands, cool lights, entertainment, videos, production, etc. is not drawing the same #’s of ppl in person anymore. What does this mean? As a liturgist with @kinshipcommons, my guess… 2/
If ppl are going to risk their health and/or spend many inflated dollars to go to a Christian conference, they want it to count. They want to be acknowledged, seen, and heard. They want their presence to make a difference at the gathering. They don’t want to be lost in a crowd.3/

It's #AAPIHeritageMonth! I've always been a little overwhelmed at how to honor #APIDA/NHPI stories, esp after such overexposure in recent years. I've been processing a lot over the past, present, and future ... 1/
We can tell stories to complicate the binaries of black/white in the U.S. We can address racial triangulation and wedge dynamics. We can address overlaying and intermingled theologies that make up our faith , about how we see God and the church. #AAPIHeritageMonth 2/
We can tell stories that don't center East Asians. We can include #APIDA and #NHPI stories. We can address colorism, militarism, and our unresolved traumas related to our transpacific immigration journeys, riddled with half known war and poverty stories, and survivalism. 3/

When I moved to my favorite city in 2016, I had no intentions of working at an Evangelical megachurch. Trump hadn’t been elected yet. The Chicago campus of Willow was still meeting at the historic Auditorium Theater. 1/
When I got a random call to be Program Lead/Creative Director, I had no idea what I was really getting into. I didn’t know who I would meet or what the journey ahead would look like.

I remember God distinctly saying to me, “Angie, I want to show you something.” 😳 2
… and God delivered. I saw many things from 2016-2018, including a massive staff turnover, an election that affected the entire church, racism, sexism, lights, sermon series called “campaigns,” branding and marketing… 3/
