Over the past week, jumped with joy several times at the ways in which #BEEFNetflix beautifully understood and portrayed the nuances of underlying rage, Korean men rage, shame, assimilation, Korean church culture, talking to your inner child, self-acceptance..1/
..class divides, socio-economic divides, Orientalism, kindred spirits, trauma bonding, family codependency, honor/shame culture, religiosity, and mental health. Many of us were planning IG Lives, streaming, podcasts, talks and furiously group texting each other. 2/
Then, the conversation shifted. Instead of focusing on all the amazing richness in each of the ten 30-minute episodes, it was overshadowed, then overpowered by the recirculation of David Choe’s 2014 podcast episode where he casually bragged about sexually assaulting a masseuse 3/

ImageImage

I’ve *never* seen a film portray this feeling in an evangelical church service this accurately (not even in Christian films). Steven Yeun grew up evangelical Christian and you can really see the experience of that in this performance.

I forgot to mention that this is from the new Netflix show #BEEF. Also, highly recommend reading this GQ interview with Steven from a few years back where he talks a little more about his childhood upbringing.…
I love that they used a Chris Tomlin cover but also loved that they originally almost used a Bethel song 💀

Forgetting non-stun processes for a moment, most know that the majority of slaughterhouses in Australia use "stunning" (the rendering of the animal insensible). In fact, this is the basis upon which slaughter of animals is heralded as "humane". But do you know what the failure……
Field study estimates of efficacy of bolt gun stunning for cows vary from 2% to 0.1% failure (including those found by a revered consultant to the Meat and Livestock industry, Dr Temple Grandin). That sounds pretty good right! Statistics are very good for whitewashing horrific……

What happens when #mushrooms 🍄 are substituted for lean ground #beef 🥩 in a single meal for 4⃣ consecutive days❓

⬇️ daily energy intake 💫

⦾ Meals were rated comparable in terms of palatability, appetite, satiation & satiety 👍 Image
The same researchers conducted a year long trial... & found that 🍄🍄 (rather than red meat) resulted in ⬇️ total energy intake.

💬 1 problem with this study (it seems to me) is that it's not clear what kind of red meat (?🍔🍟) the participants were eating.

Interesting tho..

~0.35%. That’s the annual methane reduction needed for agriculture CH4 to be #ClimateNeutral. Reduce ~5% annually, we can neutralize all additional warming from ag CH4 since the '80s. WE CAN DO THIS!

More on @CGIARclimate & @nature_org paper ⬇️ 1/
GWP* vs GWP100 better describes how #methane emissions impact the climate. Using GWP100 overestimates the warming impact of constant CH4 emissions by 3-4 times.

AND GWP100 misses climate benefits with decreasing emissions.

AND undersells warming when CH4 emissions rise.

Why is GWP* important? From the paper: GWP* emphasizes CH4 reductions can only contribute meaningfully to limiting climate change, as long as CO2 hits net-zero.

GWP* shows the true benefits w/ CH4 cuts. Making the work farmers/ranchers are doing to cut CH4 more significant. 3/

Would reducing red meat consumption in Canada do more hard than good? A thread: (1/13)
@epicurious, @FoodSystems, @EATforum – you’ve heard it multiple places: ‘We must reduce meat consumption for climate change, the environment, to reduce our dietary carbon footprints.’ However, what could the implications of this be for #Canada? (2/13)
In a recent @CBCNews article, a researcher suggested that reducing beef consumption by 25% would result in a reduction of livestock related emissions of 10%. Sounds good, but… (3/13)

Here's the Michigan University study that came up in the recent (overblown) #Biden/#beef controversy:… What would the carbon footprint reduction be when Americans would reduce beef intake with 90% (VERY hypothetical)?

Let's look at the numbers... THREAD👇
Here are the scenarios (converted to yearly data):

- baseline: Americans diets = 1.8 tCO2-eq/p/y
- halving animal foods = ?
- additional reduction of beef to 10% = ?
Here are the predicted savings (per person, per year):

- halving animal foods = 1.2 t CO2-eq/p/y --> -0.6 t
- + beef restriction (to 10%) = 0.9 t --> -0.9 t

What's our #beef with beef?

Public interest on #climate, #biodiversity & #diet is rightly growing

#Meat is often at the heart of the debate but it's important we look past headlines & unpick the detail

#EatBetterMeat #EatOrganic #BBCOne 👉
Our #meat comes from different #farm systems

When animals are grazed on grass, as in #organic, this can have positive impacts on #climate & #nature. Intensively produced #grain-fed chicken & pigs can have the opposite effect

#EatBetterMeat #EatOrganic 👉
🐄🐖🐔 Intensively farmed animals are almost always fed on #grain & imported #soya

The production of animal feed can exhaust soils and drive #rainforest clearance

This is devastating for the #climate & #biodiversity

If you’re watching the #Amazon burn and worry about the environment, and if you wonder about #beef and why it is in the news re the environment often, and you’d like to know our view on this then this is the thread for you ...
Climate change and a biodiversity catastrophe are two of the biggest challenges that we face, and the way we think about food, agriculture and, specifically, meat as consumers and as a society is a massive part of that.
It’s true that beef production can be worse for the environment than the production of other foods, especially when those animals are intensively fed with grains and when deforestation occurs to meet demand, which is on the rise globally.

While this is the oldest cook book I have in my possession, over the years collected multiple first edition regional and local cooks books - Indian Jewish cooking both the Calcutta and the Kerala versions, Malabar Muslims, and others.
Beef was and remains a staple for many in India. To make it a political harbinger and edifying it with nationalism is ridiculous.

Farmers face the biggest Brexit hit and still they don’t think they need to worry! THREAD
In a grim report published on Friday, the #government Agricultural, Horticultural and Development Board @TheAHDB predicted that post-Brexit #farming incomes would fall by 25%. @FarmingUK /1
This wasn’t just in an apocalyptic #NoDeal scenario. If it was, farmers seeing this figure could mutter Project Fear and carry on their arduous work. The problem is that this collapse occurs IN ANY BREXIT SCENARIO @bbcfarmingtoday. /2
It is no exaggeration that entire enterprises, for example poultry production, could be unviable if the AHDB predictions are correct as @RCorbettMEP notes. This is a problem because, in Shropshire @BBCShropshire poultry accounts for 86% of all cattle and livestock. /3
