So #StarWars Galaxy’s Edge has been open for nearly four years, yet I did encounter a TSA quirk when traveling with my lightsabers from NYC to Orlando this morning for Galactic Starcruiser & #MayThe4th. First, let me say the agents were entirely professional and nice. Still…
I put the hilts in carry on instead of checking and they, along with assorted #StarWars greeblies & such, triggered scanners. Expectedly. But I didn’t expect them to be viewed as alien, ironically.
TSA Guy 1: What are these? Are these car parts?
Me: Lightsabers.
TSA Guy 1:…?
Me: Don’t worry, they aren’t activated.
TSA Guy 2: They’re really heavy. These aren’t light like the ones I’ve seen.
Me: Um, it’s an elegant collectible for a more civilized age?
TSA Guy 2: You need TWO of these?
Me: Well [shrugging] I don’t know. I have Jedi stuff to do…
TSA Guy 2: They could be considered a blunt instrument or weapon.
TSA Guy 1: Nah, he wouldn’t do that. He’s a Jedi!
Me: And the TSA has a section on it being allowed [this is true but up to discretion of the agent]
TSA Guy 2: [kinda laughing but trying to be serious]Well, they don’t look like toys. You might want to check them in the future
TSA Guy 1: [Clearly enjoying this 6am distraction] I’m going to let you wrap these up cause they don’t look cheap
Me: We wouldn’t want them to turn on
TSA Guy 2: [moving me along] Good Morning. Have fun
TSA Guy 1: You mean, May the Force be with you.
Me: Always.
So what did I learn? Well, I actually was a little low key freaked in case they wouldn’t let me carry them on…
Also, I suppose I’ve learned that even though LaGuardia isn’t exactly an Outer Rim spaceport, not everyone out there knows about Savi’s in #StarWars Galaxy’s Edge, and the ways of the Jedi are forgotten by some…
Also I learned that while my Elemental lightsaber with a Rancor tooth looks really cool, my Protection & Defense one looks like a car part, which is a credit to designers.
And as always, I learned it helps to be friendly and chill in these potentially tense airport situations.
A Thread: Some of you know I also co-host a #paranormal & true crime podcast called #NightMerica. Last week we did an ep about ghost stories involving slaves. I grew up in the South & always loved ghost tours but I've had a realization how wrong they are...
I've been working on how to be antiracist, and out of that journey I began to see that ghost tours often co-opt the stories of slaves for entertainment (often for largely white audiences). That doesn't sit well. Especially considering many tours in the South involve
involve stories of Plantation owners with slave mistresses. Those mistresses were sometimes said to become jealous of the wives. And there is often a tragic end. On tours, you might even see quarters of these mistresses. I heard these stories countless times before it clicked...
On the occasion of Tom Baker’s 85th birthday, allow me to share the time the Fourth Doctor of #DoctorWho (and my first Doctor) led to international intrigue in 2013, and potential blacklisting... /1
I was excited to do a phone interview on a Friday morning, Nov. 8, 2013, w/ #TomBaker about #DoctorWho 50th anniv special. He was amazing, and delightful. I asked him the obvious question (normally I avoid these because I know they’ll get shot down and waste precious time): /2
"Will you be in #DoctorWho 50th?" I could almost sense glee building over phone lines. “I am in the special. I’m not supposed to tell you that, but I tell you that very willingly and specifically; the BBC told me not to tell anybody but I’m telling you straightaway.” /3
