The anti-inflammatory effects of #exercise: mechanisms and implications for the prevention and treatment of disease 🧵

2. Physical inactivity is linked to various health problems like #type2diabetes, #heartdisease, #cancer, and more. This is partly because of the accumulation of visceral fat, which triggers #inflammation in the body and promotes the development of these diseases.
3. Exercise has been found to have a protective effect against these chronic inflammation-related diseases, thanks to its anti-inflammatory effect. Regular exercise can reduce visceral fat mass and create an anti-inflammatory environment in the body.
4. One way that exercise exerts its anti-inflammatory effect is by releasing interleukin-6 (IL-6) into the bloodstream from contracting muscle fibers, which leads to increases in other anti-inflammatory molecules like IL-10 and IL-1 receptor antagonist.
5. Exercise also increases the number of regulatory T cells that secrete IL-10, reduce the number of pro-inflammatory monocytes in the bloodstream and inhibit their infiltration into adipose tissue, further decreasing inflammation.
6. While regular moderate exercise is associated with a lower risk of infection, elite athletes who engage in long, intense training sessions may experience some degree of immunosuppression due to the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise.
7. There are still many questions remaining about the anti-inflammatory effects of exercise, such as the the optimal modes, intensities, and durations of exercise for maximum anti-inflammatory effect.
8. Overall, regular exercise can have a powerful anti-inflammatory effect in the body, which can help protect against a range of chronic diseases (see thread 2).
9. Take home message. Exercise as part of our daily routine can reduce the risk of health problems and improve overall health. Any form of exercise can make a positive impact on our health and well-being, and it's never too late to start!
