1/n Hi All, @BlueDotWaters here again!👉🔵😄
Hopefully by now we’ve given you a good taste of what #BlueDots are, why they’re worth protecting, what pressures are affecting them and what the various sectors can do to address them.
BUT.......
2/n What else is going on and how can you and others get involved?🫵
Well it so happens that @WatersProgramme has been working with #communities👥 since 2016 to facilitate engagement with our wonderful water resources and aquatic environment.👉🏞️
3/n Our #CommunityWaterOfficers are available to guide and help enthusiastic members of the public, be it...
👥community groups
🎣angling clubs
🚣‍♀️water sports clubs
🏐GAA clubs and;
💧rivers trusts
...among many others to connect with and help to enhance our #waterbodies💧 Image
4/n As part of these #outreach efforts we provide #funding through the Community Water Development Fund to help pay for worthwhile projects that will raise awareness of or even better, improve water quality.💦
Over €520K has been granted for projects in 2023 alone! #CWDF2023 Image
5/n Not only do applications under this fund receive preference if they are in a #BlueDot area, there is also a separate pot each yr dedicated to projects in #BlueDotsWaters!
Why not grow your #BlueDot project ideas with your local #CommunityWaterOfficer: lawaters.ie/team/communiti…
6/n To give a taste of the kinds of projects we fund we’ll give a few examples recent examples below...👀
7/n We’ve both been #giving and #facilitating talks to various groups. 🗣️🔵
As you may have noticed it’s hard to stop us talking about #BlueDots once we get going! Here I am talking them up to East Wicklow Rivers Trust in Ashford.
Follow the Trust on FB: facebook.com/EastWicklowRiv… Image
8/n We’re facilitating several river walks for people to go out and experience #BlueDotWaters with expert ecologists guiding them and telling them about the aquatic biodiversity supported by these amazing places.
Keep an eye out for upcoming #BlueDot walks in Cork and Wicklow. Image
9/n Our CWOs have also been visiting schools ⬆️ and ⬇️ the country to inspire the next gen to get involved in protecting our #waterquality.
Many kids don’t know that their local river, lake or coast is one of the best in the country and who doesn’t enjoy a bit of pond dipping? ImageImageImage
10/n Our #CommunityWaterOfficers and #CatchmentScientists assisted Kinnitty Community to erect #BlueDot Signage on the Camcor River to celebrate their local water quality.
These have QR codes which lead to @WatersProgramme's website with more information about #BlueDotWaters🔵 ImageImageImageImage
11/n A booklet by @Corkcoco, @WatersProgramme and @EPACatchments celebrating the Coomhola catchment in Cork was recently produced by @StreamScapes. 🎨🖌️
This is a lovely resource describing the #historical, #cultural and of course #environmental heritage of the area. Image
12/n Similar resources are currently being developed for other areas including #Connemara, #Mayo and other areas of #Cork, funded through the dedicated #BlueDot fund.
13/n ANNND ACTION! 🎥🎬
#Video projects showcasing #BlueDots are currently under development in Mayo and Connemara.
These will show the value of these waterbodies and their catchments as well as their meaning to local people. #CelebratingBlueDots #BlueDotWaters🔵
14/n Scoping Studies for #RiverRestoration⛏️ were performed in several locations.
One example is the Straid in Donegal. This project looked at the feasibility of overcoming a #riverbarrier 🚧issue by improving #fishpassage over a bridge apron.🐟 Image
15/n In late 2022 our western CWOs ran an awareness campaign for 🔵rivers.
Here are some 📸 from a day out on the beautiful Failmore River in the Maam Valley, Co. Galway. This walk and talk were led by Dr. Ken Whelan and supported by Coiste Forbatha An Mháma & @InlandFisherIE. ImageImage
16/n #CommunityWorkshops👥 have also featured - helping to identify a roadmap of actions - here is the Abhainn Dá Loilíoch Woodland Group working with Prof. Mary Kelly-Quinn on a plan for the Abhainn Dá Loilíoch (Owendalulleegh) River, one of our last #BlueDots in east Galway.🔵 ImageImage
17/n We hope this inspires and 'wets' some appetites to hit up your local #CommunityWaterOfficer (lawaters.ie/team/communiti…) with ideas for projects to protect and restore water quality in your local #BlueDot Catchment. Get in touch!🔵💦

Day 05 of @RhodoRangers here!

I nearly forgot to tweet - apologies

The topic today - How to square a circle?

Also known as Integrated Stakeholder Management and how you might eliminate 1 invasive species from 1 county!

Buckle up because I don't know where this will go!

1/n
We have 3 loose goals as aforementioned;

- Physical removal of Rhododendron
- Increase in public awareness of status and impacts
- Push for increased collaboration and integrated management at a county and national level!

2/n

We're constantly on the lookout for invaded spots, mapping and talking to people about rhodo sites to see if we can help!

This is all voluntary for all of us

Day 04 of @RhodoRangers takeover

I was meant to talk about 2 topics today but will only be talking about Site Restoration post clearance as I counted days wrong and can dedicate another day to site wide county activity!

So you've started clearing your site - what's next?

1/n
Personally I favour hands off intervention but we can't always do this!

As you can see below, removal of rhododendron leaves a mark!

Some studies show diversity in some places is still impacted 30 years after clearance 😲

Have a look at this; hutton.ac.uk/news/native-pl…

2/n Cleared rhododendron site, ...
So where do we start?

Few simple Qs

1) What type of habitat do you have/should you have?
2) How much follow up work is there?
3) What are the future risks?

Day 03

@RhodoRangers here again

It's time to talk rhodo removal, how to, tips & tricks and more

⚠️WARNING⚠️
This is not a qualified list and we make no claims for Health and Safety - be careful out there & read rules/regulations/instructions
⚠️

Now that's out of the way

1/n
⚠️
Seriously on the Be Safe part though!
⚠️

Whats the easiest way to remove rhododendron?
A natural herbivore would be of course

Only one animal seems to eat Rhododendron, the Takin from Asia

Though I wonder what would wild boar do to areas of infestation 🤔

2/n Photo of a takin, a bulky g...
So natural grazing is out of question and its up to people to sort it!

1st step - The Plan

What type of infestation do you have? How much time & resources do you have? How sensitive is the area to disturbance limiting activity?

Simple Qs

Thursday's topic: Wolves (and lynx) in Europe.

Terrors of the forest? Or necessary keystone species?

As with everything in ecology, nothing is simple! Today I (@AdamFSmith) will look at some myths, science, and interesting facts about these species. Claws out, let's go! 🐺

1/n Wolf and lynx confront one ...
Firstly, this is my immediate research area. Over the last 3 years I have been involved in numerous studies involving wolves and lynx, however the "speed of science" means few are published right now!

It is extremely complex, so over Twitter you'll have to bare with me!

2/n Adam wearing a wolf hat and...
Europe's legal protection and softening public opinion has successfully seen population and range rebounds for these species.

Both are listed as protected under the EU Habitat's Directive and cannot be hunted in EU countries! 🇪🇺

BUT...

Hi everyone, Kez here, I'm really excited to chat with you all this week about my research & life as an Irish Ornithologist. I’ve been working in ornithology/ conservation for over nine years, first with @WWT, then PhD @QUBEcology & now working as a consultant ornithologist. 1/n
I’ve been ringing birds all across Ireland since 2014, & my main focus for ringing is raptors, waders & waterfowl, working with @nirsg and @brentgoosechase. My first love will always be the Light-bellied Brent Goose, but this week I plan to talk about my PhD research. 2/n Image
From geese to raptors is quite a jump, but it was important. Worldwide, raptors are beneficial across an entire range of ecosystem services, from regulating prey populations, providing cultural services… 3/n
