Day 1: I use twitter @melaniejward to keep up with space news and advertise events I run, but still am still relatively new to the twitter game. I'll start the the week with this about me thread that can double as a highlight for some amazing space happenings in Australia!
One of the aforementioned events happens to be coming up, a #women in #engineering highlight in honour of #WomensHistoryMonth. As young professionals officer for @aiaa I've been arranging this panel for two months, and very excited to be moderating this Thursday. #WomenInSTEM
Been passionate about space since I was a kid, even went to #spacecamp at the Challenger Learning Center. This is where I met Dr Sally Ride, she was the second grown up (the first being my mum) that encouraged my dream not to go to #space but instead to support those who do.

Yesterday we talked you through the jellybean illusion. You probably experienced a couple of things, let's see if you agree with the following...
At STEP 3, while chewing with nose pinched, what did you taste? Probably just some sweet, maybe a bit of sourness, right?
And you probably could not identify any specific flavor, correct?
And then after releasing your nose, and exhaling through your nose, didn't the flavor all of a sudden just jump out at you. Only NOW you could "taste" lemon or orange or strawberry or whatever characteristic flavor.

[Day5: Communicating the Dark Side of #Science]
Let's get to the nitty gritty, intersectional #STEM issues today.

What are your thoughts on #SciComm around the complex, messy, imperfect scientific process & the dark history of Science?
MUST READ Examples: dealing w/ Race & Racism in #Science.

@AngelaDSaini’s #Superior (& #Inferior on gender inequity)

@PhysAnth’s statement on Race & Racism thoughtfully written by an intersectional, diverse committee…

The #AugarReview is out today. I haven’t finished reading it, but here are some first impressions.

There’s much to praise. It’s measured and well argued, but ultimately it won’t solve the problem of post-18 education funding.

A thread...
The return of maintenance grants is the biggest positive, intended to end inquity of the poorest students graduating with the highest debts. #AugarReview
The reduction of fees to £7.5k is not enough to achieve anything positive for students. Anyone put off by £9,250 isn’t going to see it as a bargain and it will benefit only the graduates who earn most and won’t repay for as long #AugarReview

[Day3: Creating & Sustaining Spaces of Practice]
Q: Have you created or been part of initiatives for #Science #STEM #STEAM #SciComm practice? Are you considering creating one yourself?

Today we'll discuss "safe spaces to fail" and scaffolded experiences to build up your skills!
Why do I care?
As a former academic & now in my work to spread adaptable skills in #scicomm through #comedy, it strikes me how little prep we get to teach or give strategic talks as we make the shift from undergrad to grad levels

How many bad habits do we accumulate b/c of this?
What are some bad communication habits in #Science #STEM you've seen, experienced, or are still working to overcome?

Here's where I used to struggle:
- preparing talks the night before
- going over time
- imagining the audience wasn't even there
- bad PPTs

Day 2 of this very busy week. Unfortunately #Pint19AU & #A3Dscimeet19 colliding the same days and work/life balance made me arrive late for #A3Dscimeet19 1st session about the ASKAP. Kid school starts at 9:20am 45 min away from here. Mum will pick him up from aftercare at 6pm
Otherwise mum would have changed her working hours to start later, she would have taken him to school while I would have been prompt at 9am for #A3Dscimeet19, and I would have picked him up from aftercare at 6pm...
At least I arrived just on time to listen summary slide by Tristan Reynolds @ICRAR showing some great @WALLABYsurvey Early Science HI Spectral Line Observations, finding new dwarf galaxies in a galaxy group & high dark matter fractions #A3Dscimeet19

Ready for tomorrow and my first sessions of @SkypeScientist ! Looking forward to chatting, not with 1 , but 6 classes of middleschoolers! Send all the good vibes (and waves) my way for a good internet connection all day!

#scicomm #outreach
The morning started well with 2 different sessions with 2 classes of 7th graders from North Carolina @chowan_middle . Getting really cool questions about how it is to be a #scientist , why I chose to do what I do and how much I get to decide what I study.
