Today I was driving in the NE in and around the neighbourhoods when I was about to turn around and head home when I saw someone flag me down.

A older gentleman and his girlfriend asked me if I had any water or anything to eat. @cmcalgary
I pulled over, put my flashers on. I got out to grab them some water and snacks and saw the older gentleman limping & in obvious pain.

When I say hobbling I mean every few steps he stopped to catch his breath because he was in so much pain.

That’s when I said I’d come to them.
I grabbed some bottles of water, snacks, some backpacks, and asked them if they needed anything else.

He told me his bandages had dried to his skin and that he was refused care at a place here in Calgary when he asked for a dressing change.

Today here at @iamscicomm I'm focusing a bit on my world - the world of science adjacent #sciart and #sciviz folks who support researchers with graphic #scicomm.

I mentioned yesterday I stared down a STEM career path, but found what I really loved was communicating that science!
So where does a person go from there? For the record, everyone thought this was a poor career choice. I

Asking advice is important when considering a #STEM career. I had access to a lot of people in research and medicine to talk to and help me.

Unfortunately, this is not as easy for everyone. How do you make yourself accessible for students or potential entrants to your field? ❓ The road from student to pr...

For as long as I remember, I've loved science and also science fiction. 🚀 Science came first for me, but for many, it's been the other way around.

SF is great for inspiring future scientists and igniting interest in science. Luckily, #scicomm & #outreach has begun to notice! ⬇️ Image
I'm currently leading the 'Science Fiction as An Astrobiology Outreach & Education Tool' at @EAIastrobiology. We used reprint SF stories accompanied by original science essays in 'Strangest of All', released last spring to aid outreach amidst lockdowns.

julienovakova.com/strangest-of-a… Image
The positive response prompted us to edit a bigger, more ambitious print book of original astrobiological SF and essays. Titled Life Beyond Us, it's just funded on kickstarter and will be published next fall around the launch of @esa's Rosalind Franklin!

#BLM

In the last few years I have become increasingly outspoken to the detriment of certain professional relationships & at some reputational risk - in particular holding fellow so-called “model minority” accountable on harm

we as a society MUST stop killing & harming ppl
There are 1001 ways to avoid difficult, uncomfortable change.

Those who (I’m going to be frank) are lazy, selfish or lack sufficient ability or courage, will oppose change, often also mislabeling other people either as lazy “moochers” or aggressors.

#BLM #blacklivesmatter
A culture of civility only empowers the true aggressor. It allows silencing and mislabeling of anyone who speaks up regarding system level harm or interpersonal harm.

What are the different #covidtests, how do they work, and how can we interpret them? Here is a thread below:

#scicomm #Outreach #covid19 @SACNASUtah #AcademicChatter
Test 1: Molecular test (the most common is Rt-#PCR, or #pcrtest ). This test scans your sample for traces of specific #SARSCoV2 genetic sequences to see if they are easily found in your system. 1/n
The #PCR test result includes a value called “Cycle Threshold” (or #ct ). This basically measures how long it takes for the test to identify the #SARSCoV2 -specific genetic sequence in your sample. 2/n

Fantastic #AAASmtg workshop from @scicomm_jc on values-based communication to reach audiences who are undecided on science issues! #scicommjc #scicomm #outreach Some key takeaways 👇
Values are concepts or beliefs that guide actions and decisions. People prioritize different values. Values-based communication intentionally matches the values in a message to the values held by an audience.
To learn your audience's values, listen! Find out what questions they ask, what motivates them. "A good science communicator listens more than they talk."

This is very important. I had been preferably using Black gifs for representation.

The nature of #communication is that how you intend it and how others may receive it will pass through many other filters as well as sources of trauma.

When in doubt err on side of caution.
While I have not received any feedback that my gif use is inappropriate one should not wait to be told. Going to be sure to apply an additional lens and filter.

Caution: Some who call themselves #communication “experts” may be about promotion rather than reliable #DEI or results
In particular, when you look at who to trust or emulate on #SciComm or #MedTwitter, take note of who is effective at communicating their point, does not need to delete, can post on important topics with least misinterpretation, while maintaining the broadest audience.

#Sunspots! They're back!

This is my view of Active Region #AR2778 on the #Sun, yesterday 2020-10-28.

Fun fact: Sunspots are temporary, dark, and *cold*! (in relative terms)

Fun fact: There are MORE today!

The previous image of #AR2778 was processed into false color, using RGB curves.

The input data, started from the actual monochrome capture (using a green photographic filter), like this.

Just for fun, here is a close-cropped view of this #sunspot group. It's continuously changing, as they do, but it's obvious from hour to hour.

Day 1: I use twitter @melaniejward to keep up with space news and advertise events I run, but still am still relatively new to the twitter game. I'll start the the week with this about me thread that can double as a highlight for some amazing space happenings in Australia!
One of the aforementioned events happens to be coming up, a #women in #engineering highlight in honour of #WomensHistoryMonth. As young professionals officer for @aiaa I've been arranging this panel for two months, and very excited to be moderating this Thursday. #WomenInSTEM
Been passionate about space since I was a kid, even went to #spacecamp at the Challenger Learning Center. This is where I met Dr Sally Ride, she was the second grown up (the first being my mum) that encouraged my dream not to go to #space but instead to support those who do.
