Settle in for a long thread on same-day delivery, it comes with 14 parts and some additional commentary👇
Let's start with a fun challenge.

Pick 30 random addresses in the town in which you live. Then pick 30 randomly sized items available on Amazon, one for each address. Your task is to plan a journey that minimises the driving time and gets them delivered in a day. 1/14
Now let's make it harder, select 1000 random addresses, and 1000 randomly sized packages.

You've got five days to fulfil all the orders this time, and ten vans with which to work. You've got an hour to get the journeys planned. 2/14

The #Abqaiq oil processing facility has been targeted multiple times in the past, from Al Qaida in 2006 to foiled plot in May 2019 and now with #drones. Strikes against oil infrastructure can have massive economic and #environmental consequences.
#PT at the #Abqaiq processing facility, 6.8 million barrels of crude oil are processed on a daily basis. Saudis claim the fire is now under control. The base is at least 1000km away from Houthi controlled area, so their likely #drone of choice is the UAV-X

2019 is the 50th edition of the #SIPRIYearbook. Join SIPRI as we celebrate the occasion with a 50-day countdown and share the history of the Yearbook over the past 50 years. Watch the introductory video with SIPRI Director @dansmith2020:
The first #SIPRIYearbook was published in 1969 with the aim ‘to produce a factual and balanced account of a controversial subject—the arms race and attempts to stop it’. The rise in world military spending and disarmament efforts, including the #NPT, take central focus.
'In whatever way the nuclear situation is examined, the inescapable feature is what enormous quantities of weapons have been amassed' – Movement towards a first-strike capability by the #US and #USSR, the #SALT talks and European security were a focus of the 1970 #SIPRIYearbook.

I can’t wait for y’all to get to know @BetoORourke. Those of us here at Veterans for Beto were grassroots organizers for his Senate campaign last summer and fall. Those of us in our group know Beto as well as anyone, and our support for Beto has not wavered since the mid-term.
We’re #Texas #veterans, y’all. All of us wore the uniform (or were close to someone who did), we’re patriots, and we love Texas and our country. We’re also mostly pretty cynical about politics and politicians, which is why it’s remarkable how much we support @BetoORourke.
This veteran had never gotten off the couch to support any politician. But there I am, putting up road signs in September Texas heat. I personally knocked probably over 1,500 doors, and Vets for Beto thousands more. For @BetoORourke, I, and my colleagues, showed the fuck up.

Okay my #medieval #military #history followers, sharpen your pens and let's propose a session for #UK @IMC_Leeds July 2020 about "transgressing borders" which is a fancy way of saying #espionage & #spy stuff (#codes, #crime) and every sort of personal or public #Treason! 😎
I should say it'd be a multidisciplinary session about all kinds of hidden #medieval #History, any studies to do with secrecy & spying and its materials/places/cases. I'll can't make @MedievalAcademy thus the @IMC_Leeds 2020 appeal here. Cc @stuffofwar @latineast @Medievalists
For those inquiring about Kalamazoo, yes I'll be proposing a multidisciplinary #espionage session there, I'll tweet more about that once I confirm a sponsor for @KzooICMS 2020.

The #Menindee mass fish deaths bring to mind the time @Nat_Irrigators successfully lobbied @GregHuntMP to disallow Critically Endangered listings for the #MurrayDarling and #MacquarieMarshes (nominated by @hsi_australia and made by @Mark_Butler_MP) in 2013 abc.net.au/news/2013-11-0…
We made the submissions for both back in 2008 and their assessments by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee began in 2008 and 2009 respectively. After years of workshops, expert research etc. the TSSC delivered the advice that both should be listed as Critically Endangered
This advice was delivered to then Environment Minister @Mark_Butler_MP in 2013, and to his credit he acted on the TSSC's advice and made the listings. @Nat_Irrigators, led at the time by @tomchesson01 (former adviser to Nat Shadow Water Security Minister John Cobb) weren't happy

Ranking of different foods/commodities by #environmental footprints changes based on production differences, but also based on the assumptions of the modeler(s) and the functional unit (denominator of the footprint). Here's global livestock with crude protein as the denominator
Here's a UK specific example using nutrient density as the functional unit where beef has a lower carbon footprint than chicken.
Here's a ranking using essential amino acids as the functional unit that shows beef with less land use than peas.

this is a long thread on #nauru, where i spent last week. nauru is currently most visible as a site for australia’s offshore detention of asylum seekers and refugees. it is also the location of a longstanding #phosphate mine which covers over 2/3 of the island 1/22
#nauru is experiencing considerable #climatechange. im going to outline some of the social-environmental stresses i observed that nauruans, refugees and asylum seekers are facing, and why we need to talk about #colonialism and #environmental racism for #climatejustice 2/22
#nauru is a beautiful island. its main resource is #phosphate. germany colonised nauru in the late 1800s and in the early 1900s the british found phosphate and started to exploit it for fertiliser and munitions with australia and nz, who became nauru’s trustees in the 1920s 3/22

What do you do when you disagree with someone ? ... How do you handle a different perspective? ... I check we are talking about the same thing... consider the logic and evidence and finally stress test their conclusions...
I did that and I disagreed with @CarolineLucas my leader
First off @CarolineLucas is #spectacularly bright, #hardworking and a #visionary who pulled me into @TheGreenParty orbit. There are very few... perhaps no other UK politicians with a more determined record of standing up for our collective #environmental #rights #newgreenpolitics
