When @CDCofBC and PHO were too busy during #Omicron counting infections to prevent infections
End result: the 6 mo-4 yo in BC became the "most infected and least vaccinated".
Attack rate refers to infection rate causing the change in sero-prevalence ( #covid antibody response) Image
And this happened between Sept/Oct. 2021 to March 2022 when children were "safe" in "structured activities" in schools and daycares. (sarcasm)
Vaccine for the <5 years only became available in BC in early August 2022.
You'll remember what happened next in the fall of 2022.
Tripledemic of #SARSCoV2 #RSV #Influenza in children.

Remember immunity debt theory where pandemic measures were blamed for rise in sick children in fall/winter 2022. Public health's "Use It or Lose It" explanation for drop in immunity against #RSV #Influenza
Didn't hold for BC whc saw large #RSV wave in 2021 & so no debt to repay Image
Well you guessed it, real culprit was #Covid
Who could have guessed?

"recent study sequenced 105 RSV + specimens from symptomatic patients diagnosed wt RSV during autumn 2022 surge & showed that viral characteristics didn't contribute to extent or severity of the surge" Meaning you can't blame the virus for more severe disease. Respiratory syncytial virus...
"Patients infected with COVID-19 can have long-lasting changes in both innate and lymphocyte based immune functions, precisely the systems most engaged in defense against respiratory viruses." Image
"These findings further support our hypothesis that COVID-19 had adverse impact on the immune and respiratory systems of children, making them susceptible to severe respiratory viral infections from RSV and other viruses."

"@CTVNews has spoken with some of the staff directly but agreed to conceal their identities for fear of repercussions, which has been a massive concern in the province: muzzled healthcare workers of all stripes describe a culture of fear"
"fear for speaking out about the failures of the system, even when they’re solely advocating for their patients’ safety and care. @Fraserhealth has repeatedly told ED physicians to not openly discuss our ‘challenges’ with the public,” the group writes in its letter."

This is what happens when mask mandates in health care are eliminated and the public is given the false narrative that COVID-19 is no longer a threat.

Unfortunately the message the world heard when the WHO announced the end of the global health emergency, is that the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Minister Dix and Dr. Henry said in a joint statement that "COVID-19 is no longer causing severe disease in most people."
But the BC COVID-19 situation report from April 23-29 reported 175 hospitalizations, 16 critical care admissions and 42 deaths.

“But if you actually look at what’s happening with hospitalizations, since Omicron subvariants emerged, it’s a giant wave that’s lasted not only much longer, but is also just as high as those we saw in 2021 or even higher at some points." @BlakeMMurdoch
“It’s like a high tide that’s always elevated, and this steadier state can mean a higher total burden over time.” Especially so given our 🇨🇦healthcare system has a low bed count per population compared to most OECD country. Meaning no slack in healthcare system.

In BC Long Term Care Facilities mandatory masks and screening of all visitors for COVID was stopped on April 6.

Dr. Henry said “we don't have any outbreaks in long term care right now of influenza or COVID [in B.C.],"

But is this really true?

BC CDC Covid stats show that seniors aged 80 plus continued to have high levels of hospitalizations and death from January 30 to March 27, 2023.

It is suspicious that no outbreaks have been declared since January 20, 2022 in Vancouver Coastal Health (which has the most number of LTC facilities in BC) shortly after a letter stating outbreaks would be declared only at the discretion of the MHO.
