My friends have been trying hard to fight disinformation on WeChat this #AbElection2023

We did not want to share this because of the great shame it would bring to our community.

But everyone who #abvotes Monday should know the truth @ElectionsAB

A fake tweet claiming to be from @albertaNDP leader @RachelNotley was shared on several Alberta WeChat groups.

It positions Rachel as allowing kids access to gender affirming surgeries without parental consent.

This is false.

The fake tweet has many mistakes obvious to native English speakers

proud as “pround”

“christian fascism”

Our province as “alberta”

“Enough is Enough”

“affirm their childs”

Learning a new language is hard so I don’t take issue with the text

We made a graphic to make it easier to know this was fake.

Top text says “UCP think you are easily fooled”

Bottom text says “Chinese lie to Chinese”

We worked hard to explain the issues with the text to anyone that had doubt.

If every party does not follow the same rules then it is hard to say that we had a democratic #AbElection2023.

This is why the Alberta Election Act s.160 has laws about false statements about a candidate.

This fake tweet crossed the line @ElectionsAB #abvotes

We are in the age of #DeepFakes and #GenerativeAI images. False information will be harder to detect if we don’t put an end to it now.

Every Albertan deserves to make an informed decision based on facts and not one sided lies.

People on WeChat laughed at me and told me I was blinded by my passion

I’m passionate about laws that are applied equally to every Albertan. That is the foundation of a society that cares for equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism.

I cannot sit silently while our own elected officials “interfere in the administration of justice”

Instead of consequences @KayceeMaduYEG was rewarded with a Deputy Premier position.

This set a bad example for all Albertans.

This is not partisan.

I do not blame the Chinese community, they were following the example of our elected officials.

I want everyone who #abvotes to be able to make an informed decision without having to fight lies in from their own echo chambers #AbElection2023
