4 human rights defenders in #Turkey, incl both the former Chair & Director of @aforgutu, have been convicted of crimes they didn’t commit.
It’s over 4yrs since the first arrest & we expect a decision on the final stage of their appeal soon.
Here's what's happened so far 👇
1. Taner Kılıç, a human rights defender and then Chair of Amnesty International Turkey, is arrested on false charges of being part of a terrorist organisation and placed in pre-trial detention.
2. Ten human rights defenders (now known as the “Istanbul 10”) are arrested while attending a workshop on the island of Büyükada in Istanbul and eight of them are imprisoned on 18 July 2017.
None of these are crimes: they are human rights that belong to every person.
But in #Turkey, human rights are under attack and people are being arrested for these basic rights.
There is a growing climate of fear among people whose voices #Turkey wants to silence.
False charges, unfair trials & harsh sentences are rife, and scores of human rights defenders are imprisoned for months or years while they await trial for a ‘crime’ they didn’t commit.
#Pride month should be about celebrating the #LGBTQ+ community and highlighting the fight for equality & freedom around the world 🌈🌍
But, disappointingly, we’ve seen backlash against those campaigning for the rights of the #Trans community here in the UK, especially at work 🏳️⚧️
Data by the @The_TUC shows that 7 in 10 #trans workers say their experience of workplace harassment or discrimination has a negative effect on their mental health
@stonewalluk research found that 1 in 8 trans employees said they had been attacked by a colleague or customer
