Finally, with mounting criticism from faculty, students, alums, & #Jewish orgs, @Penn speaks out ⬇️ about next week’s literary festival, which will feature Roger Waters & a host of other merchants of hatred 😩😩.
.@TheAENetwork finds this statement disappointing 😔😔
A thread🧵
At issue is the fact that multiple @Penn departments, centers are co-sponsoring #antisemitic speakers & those who denigrate #Jewish identity & glorify terror violence against Jewish civilians. How can Jewish students @ UPenn ever feel respected in these academic spaces again? 😢
@Penn University officials chose not to express any disappointment in their faculty (who are the festival co-organizers) or in those who have shown markedly poor judgement in remaining associated w/this event, despite being FULLY AWARE of its line-up of heinous speakers. #shameful
@Penn There is also no acknowledgment of the insensitive, callous timing during the Days of Awe, w/antisemites scheduled to speak on the campus just a day before Yom Kippur. 😩 This was a key concern of @TheAENetwork faculty @Penn ⬇️⬇️ (but apparently not the administration). Sad. 😢😢
@Penn @TheAENetwork To be clear, the festival shouldn’t be cancelled. But the sponsoring departments have agency & have decided to remain affiliated. The university could have expressed profound disappointment in that choice & should’ve noted next steps: will better vetting occur in the future?
@Penn @TheAENetwork The statement also doesn’t include any action plan to address campus #antisemitism and educate about it, or state how administrators will work to improve the campus climate for #Jewish, #Zionist, & all students. So much more could’ve/should’ve been said! #LeadershipMatters /end.

Hosting literary/art festivals on campuses can enhance the learning students receive in their coursework, classes & can promote cultural diversity and belonging.
But NOT when these extramural curricular events feature speakers notorious for trafficking in #antisemitism 😩 @Penn
.@JFedinPhilly & @ADLPhiladelphia have already alerted campus officials to a set of festival speakers who have (repeatedly) crossed the line into #antisemitic tropes, canards and have a disturbing record of glorifying terrorists and condoning/justifying terror violence 😮😮 ⬇️⬇️
@JFedinPhilly @ADLPhiladelphia Yes, Roger Waters is a featured speaker on a program co-sponsored by 2 University of Pennsylvania academic departments and centers. @TheAENetwork calls on university officials to distance the campus from this event & to unequivocally & forcefully speak out against #antisemitism.
With campaigns to implement academic boycotts of #Israel 🇮🇱 on the rise & new, obnoxious efforts to marginalize and demoralize #Jewish-#Zionist students underway, more than ever concerned faculty must speak out in support of open inquiry—& against #antisemitism! ⬇️⬇️ #academia
Nearly 400 Jewish scholars have now signed ⬇️ statement w/more adding their names daily 👏.
There’s no organizational sponsors, and no logos appear on the Open Letter. It’s a collaboration of many #Jewish, educational, & civil rights orgs. #BetterTogether
I was delighted to be among the 25 scholars invited to endorse this important effort as an initial signatory, & then share it widely w/colleagues for their consideration. It’s not surprising that many @TheAENetwork faculty members have now added their names to this letter! 👏
It’s always depressing to see #academia being needlessly politicized, with scholars & students subjected to punishing boycotts 😩
Given this ⬇️ new development, unfortunately many researchers will be negatively impacted—including Jews, Druze, Arabs, Palestinians 😞😞 #HigherEd
ICYMI: under this new @StateDept guidance, which imposes territorial restrictions on 🇺🇸-🇮🇱 academic joint ventures, #Israeli faculty who work on campuses in eastern Jerusalem, the Golan, & the West Bank/Judea Samaria won’t be eligible to apply for BSF, BIRD, or BARD grants. ☹️
@StateDept Impeding/banning 🇺🇸-🇮🇱 academic collaborations will have negative repercussions in terms of all the important research projects that will be stymied & never initiated. Harmful for the region, but mostly harmful for Arab, Jewish scholars on these campuses who rely on the grants.
FYI ⬇️ Al Shabaka, a think tank that has long featured essays by anti #Israel 🇮🇱 academics (mostly in 🇺🇸 and 🇨🇦) that often make their way as cited sources into peer-reviewed journal articles & university press books, has now jumped the shark 😞
I used to recommend to my students that they follow & read Al Shabaka. Given that it’s now in the business of denigrating and demeaning #Jewish identity and #Zionist students, & publishing pieces that call for undoing 1948 & “de-Zionification” there’s no way I’d do that now.
Shocker: the author of this latest Al Shabaka article is the same faculty member @mountroyal4u who bestowed this year’s Calgary Peace ☮️ Prize on a virulent anti-🇮🇱 propagandist who traffics in #antisemitic tropes & canards.
FYI @CIJAinfo @HonestRepCanada
It’s been 2+ weeks since #Jewish and #Zionist students @UMich were subjected to a hateful campus march, w/their peers & others parading across the campus grounds shouting threatening slogans—and still not a word from the university administration 😩 #antisemitism@UMichPrezOno
What happened on 1/12 at the University of Michigan was a hate rally, w/rhetoric evoking images of violence and terror, expertly choreographed & disseminated to online platforms. Sad to see the campus exploited by propagandists & the educational mission so grievously subverted 😞
Yet again a virulently anti #Israel 🇮🇱 student group is trying to intimidate & pressure peers to boycott courses taught by a couple of visiting Israeli profs. So depressing 😞 to see a campaign against open inquiry & free intellectual exchange happening @UChicago of all places!
So disheartening to see this next phase of anti Israel activism on 🇺🇸campuses 😩. BTW: these particular courses are being taught by a rabbi, an expert on #Jewish thought & theology, and by an academic who actively participated in Israel’s peace negotiations w/Egypt & Jordan.
We often hear anti #Israel activists insisting that BDS “only” targets Israeli universities and doesn’t impact or seek to harm individual scholars. Yeah, right. I’ve never seen these activists ever try to avoid causing maximum hardship for Israeli academics. #highered#academia
