Europe must ensure Navalny's murder is not in vain: here's how. 1/ 🧵
Alexei Navalny was one of the bravest leaders of his time. With a view of Russia as it could be & an insight into the hell it would become under Putin. 2/
What Russia needed, was someone who openly refused to be silenced. And Navalny was willing to be that man. Putin or him. All or nothing. And with that, he signed his own fate. 3/
His death says everything about the state of Russia today.
Since the invasion of Ukraine repression has increased exponentially. It shows Putin with his back to the wall, stopping at nothing, more dangerous than ever. 4/
Navalny’s death should sound alarm bells all over Europe. 5/
First, we need to find out what has really happened. Not that we have any illusions, but every bit of hard truth that comes out of Russia is important in the fight against Putin’s omnipresent lies. 6/
Second, the international community must hold Putin accountable. We need to extend sanctions to the full Navalny list, describing the 6.000 people who form the backbone of his regime. 7/
Third, we need an emergency European Council to set up war bonds for Ukraine, make steps towards a proper common European defence union and implement additional sanctions. 8/
A perfect storm is heating up between an imperial Moscow, an ill-prepared and poorly led Europe going to the polls and an impressionable US public opinion driven by unhinged, Putin-loving so-called ‘republicans’. 9/
If Navalny taught us one thing, it’s that Putin will not allow anyone in his world who is not under his total control. No illusions: He is at war with us & our way of life. We will meet him with a more forceful Union, or we will all suffer as a result. 10/10

After the massacre in #Bucha nobody can say that they didn’t know.
Therefore I call for a special meeting of the European Council to take new decisive measures against Putin’s criminal regime 👇🧵 1/4
We urge @eucopresident@vonderleyen@JosepBorrellF to immediately convene #EUCO meeting to impose :
⛽ A full oil, gas & coal embargo;
⛴️The closure of all ports to 🇷🇺 vessels;
🏦Disconnection of all 🇷🇺 banks from SWIFT;
💰Extension of sanctions to names provided by @navalny 2/4
As Putin concentrates his brutal aggression on the East & South of Ukraine & attacks Odessa, there is an urgent need to send weaponry & military equipment including tanks, armored vehicles, heavy artillery, anti-ship missiles & sophisticated anti-aircraft protection systems 3/4
Pro-Europeans should be the first to be critical when things go wrong. On vaccines, they certainly have…
My take on @vonderleyen’s #vaccine fiasco and how to move forward and fix it 👇🏻
Part 2.
EU is world leader in producing vaccines, yet there is a lack of supply in every EU country.
Part 3.
The vaccine contracts are unbalanced — precise on pricing and liabilities but weak and vague on supply and on timing.
Romania takes over the EU Presidency at a critical time, when several legislative negotiations need to be concluded ahead of European elections. Read my thoughts in this thread 👇
First, I wish them the best of luck. At the same time, the Romanian government must deliver on their commitments with regard to the #ruleoflaw.
The reforms of the judiciary, of the criminal code and also the NGO law must fully reflect the recommendations of the Venice Commission, and be re-assessed by this expert body before enactment.
#Zuckerberg | You remind me of “Kalden” in the book “The Circle”; the founder of a big data company, growing out of his control, influencing elections.
#Zuckerberg | Nearly every year since 2003 there was a wrongdoing or problem for which you had to apologise; twice in 2017 and three times in 2018 and we are only May! Are you capable to fix it?
#Zuckerberg | You said you will apply the new #GDPR, but are you telling the truth? Since the outbreak of the #CambridgeAnalytica scandal, you transferred European data of non EU citizens to servers outside Europe, which is forbidden.
