Karen spent most of the day in back to back meetings on diverse topics; management, joint ventures, new product line development. When Karen finally walked out of the conference room even she felt a tightness on her lower back.
She glanced down at her watch quickly taking in the time before heading back to her office to pack up. The day was finally over, and she was eager to get home to get ready for her date with Jason.
He had gone all out on their first date and while they agreed to go low key for their second, she wanted to do something special. She quickly makes it to her apartment building, wanting to get changed first before picking up the dinner.
Karen walked down the hallway to her apartment door when she saw a letter with her name on it, taped to the door. *Not very secure…* Karen mused as she pulled the letter off and entered her apartment.
Karen tore open the letter as she closed the door behind her. As she read the letter she felt the wind being knocked out of her, as she got to the end her legs buckled and she leaned back on the door sliding down to the ground.
She crumpled the letter in her hand as tears welled up in her eyes.
Karen kept her eyes shut, failing to keep the tears from falling. “Stupid…stupid…” she muttered to herself between sniffles.
She wiped her eyes and tossed the letter in the trash. She rose up to her feet catching her composure again. “I didn’t have any time anyway…” she said aloud, wanting something to break the silence.
She looked out at the view of the city below and a small smile formed on her lips. “They need me.” She said firmly as she changed to her Power Girl outfit, flipping her cape over her shoulder and flew out.
Three home buglers, seven convenience store robberies, and two drunk drivers later, the Karen flew up high above the clouds. There was a time when she was afraid of heights; but that was a lifetime ago, a universe away.
Now she loved being up high, so high that air was thin, and the sounds below was just a dull hum. Normally she prefers the day, the feeling of the sun’s rays on her skin, recharging her cells; but the moon was full.
It was a different world up in the night’s sky, as far as she could see; under the moon’s lights nothing but peace and tranquility. Clouds hover beside her and she dipped her hand in one and watched the microscopic crystals dance against her glove.
Just as she relaxed and was about to call it a night, she felt her throat tighten and she started grasping for air. She hands reached for her throat trying to grab what was chocking her but felt nothing. Then she felt her body starting fall.
Like an angel being thrown out of heaven and Karen fell and crashed into an abandon mall complex. Karen gasp for breath as rose up from the debris, brushing off the dirt off her. She looked around for her mysterious attack her but couldn’t find anyone.
"Found you" a voice echoed in the darkness.
Before Karen could react beams of light from multiple directions started striking her. Shoulder, then calf, hip, then gut. Karen struggled to fight back, swinging her arms violently in the air, swinging her legs around, hitting nothing.
Feeling desperate, she unleashed her heat vision and spun 360 trying to hit the person attacking her.

She panted as her eyes cooled, her body aching from the attack. “Show yourself!” she shouted.
Then in the distance…she saw the light twinkling. She took a step towards it, trying to see what it is. Instantly the light vanished and she felt something sharp slice her leg. “Aghh!” she cried.
“What is the worth of a single life?” The voice returned. “How does one measure it’s power?”
Karen tried to turn towards it but something blunt hit her hard in the face causing her to fly into a brick wall. She struggled to get up, as she started to cough up blood. As Karen saw the blood on her hand, fear began to run down her spine.
She slowly turned around and highlighted in the moonlight was the dagger she gave Jason.

Holding the Dagger was a hooded figure. All she saw was the red eyes that glowed in the darkness.
“Pain is the loom upon which the cloth of the universe is woven. But you my dear, is a thread that doesn’t belong… and needs to be cut.”

It threw the dagger and Karen’s world went black.
