🧵 (1/10). When we first resumed in-person again at my Uni, I vividly remember a chat with a student who approached me after class. We had just finished a lecture on the origins of the MMR-Autism myth which then spilled over to a chat on the current covid 💉conspiracies/myths…. 🧵 (2/10). He told me how his parents went down the online covid-conspiracy rabbit hole and had become “radicalized”. I remember being struck with how apt the word was to explain what had/was happening to so many folks during the pandemic.

👇🏻 If you still follow him, you need to do some self-reflection. He’s not the only covid “influencer” who came out of nowhere and demonstrated a clear pattern of incredibly toxic, often abusive behaviour. There are others still here with large platforms doing daily damage, too. A rising number of online 🦠 “influencers” (speaking broadly here as a general type) have learned that displaying a rage-farming, polarizing presence gets them likes/followers (which is a sad indictment on our society, fyi) so pay attention when you see this behaviour & avoid it.

I vividly remember being out one night about 15 yrs ago for a high school reunion of sorts & we were chatting about something I was fighting for at the time (because yes, I've always been this way lol) and I will never forget what one of the girls said to me..... I had just finished chatting about a cause and she very casually said to me (having no realization how much this was to mean to me): "If I ever have a daughter, I want her to be like you. You're kind & care so much about people but you're tough, and you don't take💩 from anyone".

ALL OF THESE JOBS INVOLVE REPRODUCTIVE LABOUR THAT WAS ONCE CARRIED OUT FOR FREE, IN PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDS BY WOMEN (when we weren't granted the ability to compete in the paid labour market).

🧵So I've spoken to the family discussed in this post and it's worth explaining the terrible end of life predicaments some #LTC families are dealing with.

So this sweet resident was sent to ER with a life-threatening condition that was deemed palliative by attending hospital MD. The family, who have had TERRIBLE experiences with their #ForProfit #LTC do not want their loved one to be sent back to that LTC to die in more neglect (obviously). They want them in a hospital, preferably in a palliative care wing where they can have better care provisioning.

🧵Previously, ALC patients chose 5 PREFERRED #LTC homes they would go to. Bill 7 works to enable a situation I describe below, where our most vulnerable can be charged US-style hospital fees for merely waiting for a safe and appropriate #LTC facility.

It is downright cruel. Before, you couldn't be forced to pay the UNINSURED hospital rate if you turned down an LTC that was not among your top 5.

Now, they're enabling hospitals to "continue the conversation" by effectively threatening to bankrupt them if they don't take the first bed available.

What we are arguing against are the upwards of 1,800 DAILY RATES they can now be charged to ALC Patients. thestar.com/politics/provi… via @TorontoStar APART FROM THE REPUGNANT AND WHOLLY DISCRIMINATORY REMOVAL OF HUMAN RIGHTS TO CONSENT, this is our VALID CONCERN:

Ps. I was warning this government that #Omicron was becoming an issue for #LTC back in early December. There were 7 outbreaks by Dec 07 but the rate of growth was clear. I continued to track it ⬆️ over the last 3 weeks. They should’ve listened and acted sooner.

REMINDER: I've been calling for #BOOSTERS for #LTC for 2+ weeks now. Had they listened + acted faster, we could've completed boosters in LTC by now. Instead, only 84% of residents + 43% of staff have boosters and no word on that # for essential caregivers. #Reactive #Omicron Case in point: My warnings from DECEMBER 13 (2+ weeks ago).

🧵 So we’re learning 41 #LTC homes are in outbreak & general visits are being halted. Essential caregivers STILL allowed in (good!). They’ve increased boosters among staff + residents BUT only meagrely & the figures are still too low! (84% residents & 43% of staff have boosters). STILL NO MANDATE FOR N95 USE AT ALL TIMES (only when caring for covid+ residents) & STILL NO TALK OF AIR QUALITY UPGRADES OR SURGE STAFFING PLAN.

This plan focuses on 💉’s & still falls short. Why aren’t mobile clinics being sent to #LTCs to expedite boosters @RodPhillips01⁉️

I would also like to point out that the new LTC Act (Bill 37) DOES NOTHING TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING AGAIN. We asked for clear legal rights for essential family caregivers and residents to never be separated again @RodPhillips01 but received none. It’s in these moments I think of all the LTC families I’ve grown very protective of….like @hollyhoneyburke @samanthalburke who were forcibly separated from their mother in #LTC….like @JoAnneBeggsRSW who was forcibly separated from BOTH her parents (one of which passed alone).

Many homes face short-staffing because there are NO STAFFING STANDARDS IN PLACE OR PROPER LABOUR ARRANGEMENTS FOR WORKERS, thus retention remains an issue even for “good” not for profits (less of an issue w/ municipal homes because they have better work contracts & retention). RECAP: There are 3 types of LTC ownership:
➖Private, For Profit (🙅🏼‍♀️)
➖Private, Not For Profit (many culturally specific homes fall under this umbrella)
➖Municipal (which have the BEST resident & staffing outcomes yet comprise the LOWEST share of our Ontarian LTC sector 🤯).

I'll be on @CityNewsTO @ 6pm talking w/ @MaleehaCity about the @fordnation currently doling out 30 year contracts to #ForProfit LTC operators with terrible records. Tendercare & Orchard Villa are 2 such homes currently up for renewal - 2 homes w/ the WORST #COVID19 death rates. Some statistics recently released by @OntarioHealthC:
➖@fordnation gov't is midway through allocating 30,436 beds
➖Majority of these (16,304) are in process of being allocated to #ForProfit providers.
➖Of those, 12,084 have gone to 10 large chain companies w/ horrid records
