been thinking about the whole "weird" discourse...🧵 ...at first, I didn't see the appeal of this strategy. I thought "weird" undersold how scary MAGA proposals & rhetoric have gotten. plus I have long self-ID'd as "weird" (as many queer folks & artists of various sorts do). so I didn't get it, until I saw...

I don't write a response to every trans person who says something I disagree with (or else that's all I'd ever do). But as someone who has researched and written about trans-related science and healthcare, Brianna Wu has no idea what she's talking about... ...gender-affirming care isn't some "extreme activist position" – it's the literal science-based medical consensus, as I explain in great detail (with over 100 sources) here:

there is no "middle of the road" solution – the *only* alternative to it...juliaserano.medium.com/gender-affirmi…

1) yet again, the @nytimes has published a lengthy "raising concerns about trans" article based largely on anecdotal stories & evidence, while ignoring the big picture & actual statistics – a tactic that I dissect in this essay (w/100+ references)...
juliaserano.medium.com/gender-affirmi… 2) for today's "raising concerns about trans" article, @nytimes tapped Pamela Paul, who's basically become their in-house anti-trans activists – many of her past anti-trans articles are discussed & critiqued here: #trans #transgender #LGBTQfair.org/home/pamela-pa…

the easiest way to delegitimize a group of ppl is to equate them with "sex" or portray them as "excessively sexual" – it's happened w/many past & present stigmatized groups. in my book Sexed Up (), I examine the why this is so pervasive & effective... juliaserano.com/sexedup.html
...here is an excerpt from the last chapter of Sexed Up (free online: ) about this tendency to sexualize marginalized groups & why respectability politics reactions to it are ineffective (because its not about what we do, but rather how they see us)... juliaserano.medium.com/sexual-dystopi…
screenshot of highlighted passage from linked-to excerpt that reads: I have already provided countless examples of how certain subpopulations are “marked by sex” and viewed as “excessively sexual” in many people’s eyes. A man who walks down the street topless is not considered “sexual,” whereas a woman who does the same is. A heterosexual couple who engages in public hand-holding or kissing is not considered “sexual,” but a same-sex couple doing the same is. If a billboard ad featured a white, cisgender, thin, able-bodied woman wearing a sexy outfit, many passersby wouldn’t even notice it, ...

this is good summary of the many complexities regarding the issue that has become a "gateway drug" to publicly expressing transphobic opinions... ...I can't tell you how many ppl since early 2022 (when GOP first started wielding this as a political issue) have asked me my thoughts on trans women competing in women's sports. I used to answer with all the (crucial) complexity that Evan shares in his piece...

I see lots of ppl on my TL asking for Bluesky invites. so I guess I will throw my hat into the ring to haha... ...I remember people were talking up Post when it first launched. I'm there now, but I find the platform to be rather boring, so not sure what to think of this latest Bluesky craze ¯\_(ツ)_/¯... post.news/@/juliaserano

FYI the word "transgenderism" began as an in-community term to refer to the phenomenon of transgender people (our existence & experiences). TERFs later twisted it to make it sound like an ideology (it's not). "eradicating transgenderism" = eradicating us.
juliaserano.blogspot.com/2015/08/regard… ...CPAC dude & others on the right may quibble over "what he actually meant was..." but their actions speak louder than words:

sharing this again given something that just happened... ...the "something" is this (TL;DR Jesse just shared 2016 private texts with an ex-colleague whose views on trans ppl/issues/healthcare have since changed). for me, this is a microcosm of the entire Jesse story arc...

of course on the day my essay finally comes out unpacking/critiquing this Jonathan Chait quote from 2 weeks ago, he's moved onto pundit-ing about the lab-leak theory haha... ...omg, Chait has somehow managed to link the lab-leak theory to "rushing kids into hormones & surgeries" – because of course he has! #GalaxyPunditBrain

if you are so obsessed with a stranger's genitals that, when they say something rather mundane, you imagine that they have made a ridiculous statement about their genitals, then perhaps you're the one who's the sexual threat, not them? ...some confirmation regarding who is the real threat here:

let's be clear: they're critiquing this study b/c it found *too low* of a regret rate. but if the study showed a 5% or 10% regret rate for gender-affirming surgeries (what Megan calls "normal" here) you *know* that they'd be screaming about how high & unsafe that would be... screenshot of Megan McArdle... ...FYI I don't think Singal or McArdle are TERFs. but it's the same circular logic. no result or interpretation would please them other than "transitioning is bad & people shouldn't do it no matter how much it improves their lives"... screenshot that reads in pa...

I'm a slow writer, but here's my initial thoughts regarding that Atlantic article: ...as a related aside, as a longtime trans writer & activist, I think it's super-important to know who your audience is, what their assumptions are, what you are hoping to achieve, and to tailor your article accordingly...

apropos of something, here's an essay I wrote back in 2017. the title conveys my mood at the moment: "stop pitting detransitoners against happily transitioned people"... juliaserano.blogspot.com/2017/06/stop-p… ...as a general rule, most trans ppl have friends & acquaintances who have detransitioned/retransitioned (for a variety of reasons) & we are supportive of them. I welcome any & all research to further understanding & address their needs...

while I was away, we apparently had both "bisexual women" & "dick energy" Discourses™. while I'm loath to weigh in directly (as both are complicated + I don't know all the specifics), this discusses unconscious meanings we project onto both (no-paywall):
juliaserano.medium.com/penises-privil… ...& this related essay explains why conservatives gratuitously smear all #LGBTQ+ ppl "gr00mers" while simultaneously embracing actual gr00mers like Andrew Tate (hint: it's not about sexual exploitation/abuse, it's about stigma-contamination; no-paywall):

I've spent much of the last 10-15 years countering online anti-trans propaganda & disinformation. it's typically some combination of irrational, paranoid, & hateful. but I don't think I've ever seen anything quite as batshit as the recent "transvestigators" trend... ...if you don't know what "transvestigators" are, here is a thread I just came across:
