As levels of type 2 #diabetes reach an all time high in the UK, with greater increases in areas of higher deprivation, we must consider how we got here.

There were 14 government-led obesity strategies in England between 1992 and 2020.

Why did they fail?

🧵(1/n) In 2021 Unit researchers @dollytheis & @martinwhite33 published an analysis in @MilbankFund examining government #obesity policies in England over nearly 30 years.

These largely failed due to problems with implementation and inadequate evaluation.

Analysis of data from >30 million people finds that one in ten early deaths could be prevented if everyone managed at least half the @NHSuk recommended level of physical activity.

#NHS recommend adults do at least 150 minutes moderate-intensity activity - e.g. brisk walking or slow cycling - or 75 minutes vigorous-intensity activity – e.g. running, swimming or fast cycling - a week.

New study by @RachelAldred and colleagues drawing on four official data sets for England for 2005-15, analyses the risks posed to other road users from bicycles, cars and taxis, vans, buses, lorries and motorbikes per billion vehicle kilometres travelled.

mrc-epid.cam.ac.uk/blog/men-more-… The researchers found cars and taxis were associated with two-thirds of fatalities to other road users, but lorries were associated with more than five times as many deaths for each km driven, with a similarly high death toll for buses.
