Talk from @DigiaimoRon on billing and coding in #radonc at #ACRO2023.
Cumulative payments in the field are down 30% from 2007 to 2023. Image #radonc CPT codes are under 77xxx, historically under radiology.

Coding rules from CMS change.
Eg, CT sim and 3D plan historically could not be billed on same day. Image

What are the arguments for and against the combination of conventionally fractionated radiotherapy (2 Gy / fx; ~10-45 fractions) with concurrent immunotherapy (ipi, nivo, etc)?

A thread. 🧵 Proponents of combination therapy will reference:
1, numerous studies of RT + ICI, all seemingly safe
2, ICI is the best option if cisplatin ineligible
3, RT is immunostimulatory, should boost effect of ICI, RT + ICI is synergistic

Oral boards for #RadOnc are approaching. Here is advice to anyone taking the exam.

@ARRO_org @ASTRO_org @ACRORadOnc @ACROresident 1, #RadOnc oral boards are the most clinically relevant exams (vs rad bio, physics, written exam, inservice, etc).
Many of the questions about management come straight from @NCCN guidelines, so use these as a primary reference.

Here is advice after writing, reading, and reviewing 1000+ manuscripts.

#MedTwitter Image Why do we do medical research?

There are at least two problems with medicine:
(1) in 100 years, half of it will be proven to be false;
(2) we don’t know which half.

Real world data vs a randomized controlled trial for comparative effectiveness research.

If you change analytical methods of the real world data, can you generate any conclusion that you want?

Yes!

The randomized controlled trial remains the gold standard.

@ASTRO_org #ASTRO21 Image Comparative effectiveness research evaluates the efficacy of one treatment relative to another, treatment A vs treatment B.

For example:
Radiation vs surgery for prostate cancer
Ivermectin vs placebo for COVID
Streptomycin for TB (1st RCT!, ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…)
