Today, we kick off our celebration of #BlackHistoryMonth:

Follow along as I tell the stories of some extraordinary Black New Yorkers every day this month who have helped shape the history of my home state and the United States of America! Albany's Sgt. Henry Johnson was a Harlem Hellfighter & WWI hero

He bravely, singlehandedly forced a group of German soldiers to retreat to save a fellow soldier

I fought for him to posthumously receive the Medal of Honor & to rename Fort Johnson for him!

President Biden’s budget proposal will emphasize the contrast between Democrats’ and Republicans’ vision for America: @POTUS’s budget will keep taxes and costs low for working families. Republicans went on record wanting to raise taxes with their national 30% sales tax proposal.

Happy #BlackHistoryMonth! Every day this month I will be honoring the achievements and contributions of the many African Americans who have helped shape New York's culture and history.

Join me in lifting up these Black leaders to tell their stories. A key LGBT figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Alain Locke was an educator, writer, and philosopher of race and culture. Locke was the editor of the influential anthology, "The New Negro," and the first African American Rhodes Scholar. This #BlackHistoryMonth we honor his legacy. Photo shows Alain Locke

Just as I predicted, President @realDonaldTrump backed off on his threat of tariffs against Mexico. He says that Mexico will take action to ‘greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States’, but if past is prologue, this is likely to be one of the president’s typical, bogus solutions to justify backing off things like the tariffs.

It’s more important than ever to demand strong action on climate change.

@SenateDems are focused like a laser on highlighting climate change every day and demanding Republicans in charge of the Senate act.

All day today, I’ll share how we’re fighting for action using #EarthDay. A graphic reading If @realDonaldTrump wants to earn Democratic support in the Senate, any infrastructure bill will have to include policies and funding that help transition our country to a clean-energy economy and mitigate the risks we face from climate change. #EarthDay washingtonpost.com/opinions/chuck…

THREAD: This month, I co-wrote an op-ed that suggested that companies be obligated to invest more in their workers and their communities prior to buying back excessive amounts of their own stock. medium.com/@SenSchumer/bu… I’ve heard criticism both publicly and privately that suggests that — when corporate executives and shareholders are given free rein to decide how to appropriately reallocate capital offered through stock buybacks and dividends — it works out best for society.

I simply disagree.

It's been one week since I challenged @SenateMajLdr McConnell to finally agree to 3 principles:

1. Climate change is real
2. It's caused by humans
3. Congress needs to act

I still haven't heard anything from him. But here's what happened this week in GOP climate denial instead: President @realDonaldTrump's administration decided all on their own to end talks with California about whether the state is allowed to set its own fuel-efficiency standards: sfgate.com/business/artic…

Hard to believe Senate Republicans are trying again to vote on the nomination of Thomas Farr as a federal judge in NC. Farr's represented the NC legislature in not 1, not 2, but 3 challenges to the state’s 2011 congressional and legislative redistricting. Here’s how that went: In 2016-17, Farr represented NC in Covington v. NC, a challenge to the state’s 2011 legislative redistricting alleging each of NC’s 19 state House districts & 9 state Senate districts constituted a racial gerrymander violating the Equal Protection Clause. brennancenter.org/legal-work/nor…

RED ALERT: I'm announcing my strong opposition to Thomas Farr as a federal judge in North Carolina. @SenateGOP has set up a vote on his nomination after Thanksgiving.

Farr is a serious threat to voting rights. Americans need to tell Senate Republicans to block this nomination. Farr defended the Republican-controlled North Carolina Legislature in a challenge to the restrictive voting laws it enacted shortly after the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Roberts, gutted the Voting Rights Act.

The American people should look at what Republicans are doing, rather than what they’re saying, when it comes to health care. Republicans are once again undermining protections for people with pre-existing conditions and sabotaging our health care system.

Mr. President: Look in the mirror, and you’ll see the person you need to speak with. Pull back your lawsuit fighting to undo protections for pre-existing conditions. And of course, every Republican SAYS they support protections for pre-existing conditions, but then they vote against them. If you are making calls, here’s who’ll you need to speak to:

Tomorrow, the Senate will take up a Democratic motion to repeal the Trump administration’s effort to expand short-term insurance plans. Let me be very clear: these so-called “short-term” plans are junk insurance. #NoJunkPlans These junk plans bait consumers in with low prices but hardly cover anything. They could not cover maternity care, or mental health care, or prescription drugs, you name it. #NoJunkPlans

After reviewing the additional background check documents on Judge Kavanaugh, four things are crystal clear.

First, the documents raise even more serious doubts in my mind about Judge Kavanaugh’s truthfulness. Second, Judge Kavanaugh stated at his hearing that the individuals at the incident involving Dr. Ford refuted her version of events. From their own public statements, we knew that to be false, and nothing in this report changes that.

17 years ago, my city and our country changed forever. Today, we remember the sacrifice & loss of those on and after #September11th. #NeverForget New Yorkers and the rest of the country will #NeverForget the bravery so many showed - especially our first responders - on that terrible day.

It is becoming increasingly clear that Judge Kavanaugh has misled the Senate Judiciary Committee in a number of ways. This should raise immediate red flags for all Senators and the American public. First, in his 2004 hearing, he told Sen Feinstein that the WH didn’t know about potential judicial nominees’ views on abortion in the vast majority of cases. But recently released emails show that he was often told about & discussed nominees’ views and ideology, including on Roe.

Earlier this year, I introduced a new bill, the “Workers’ Freedom to Negotiate Act” to reform our broken labor laws & help the very workers we celebrate on #LaborDay to earn better wages.

This is especially important given the Trump Admin & GOP assault on worker rights & safety. While President Trump promised to stand up for the working people in this country, his administration appears hell-bent on causing more harm to working families than good.

Here’s a few examples:

No amount of @realDonaldTrump tweets can change fact that real wages are declining; while cost of living– esp gas prices & health care costs, thanks in large part to GOP & Trump Admin–are continuing to climb, & families are struggling to choose which basic necessities to pay for. Pres. Trump promised American workers a $4,000 raise, instead he blew up the deficit to give a tax cut that pads the pockets of the wealthiest Americans and the executives at the biggest corporations.

On Saturday, August 25th, 2018, nine years to the day since the death of his friend Senator Kennedy, our friend and colleague Senator John S. McCain passed away. I can truly say that the time we spent together authoring and passing immigration reform were some of my proudest days in politics, in no small part because the success was shared with @SenJohnMcCain.

This Republican bill does nothing to require insurers to cover vital health care services. Bill essentially says if you have cancer, your insurance plan doesn’t have to offer cancer care.

What kind of “pre-existing condition protection” is that? Nothing in this GOP bill states that Republicans oppose the lawsuit to gut protections for pre-existing conditions.

If the lawsuit - which Rs don’t oppose - is successful, the entire ACA would be struck down, including requirements that all plans cover Essential Health Benefits.
