All sectors of the seafood industry, including fishermen, aquaculture producers, processors, and distributors have been impacted by the coronavirus outbreak. @SenateCommerce examined ways to build a stronger and more resilient seafood supply chain. Fishery disaster relief is chronically delayed, including much of the aid meant for fishermen experiencing losses because of COVID-19. I have introduced legislation to streamline the process and hold the federal government accountable. wicker.senate.gov/public/index.c…

The killing of George Floyd was senseless and wrong. No human being should ever have to die the way he did, especially at the hands of an officer who had sworn to uphold the law. Our commitment to the rule of law is what makes America great. I am glad to see the officer involved in Floyd’s death facing consequences so that the family and our society can receive justice.

Today @CongPalazzo and I announced the news that Mississippi would be receiving $21.3M in response to a prolonged period of freshwater inundation into the Gulf of Mexico that devastated Gulf Coast fisheries last year. wicker.senate.gov/public/index.c… These funds are welcome news for the many fishermen who suffered through last year’s unprecedented opening of the Bonnet Carré Spillway, but our state deserves a long-term solution to disasters like these.

The Paycheck Protection Program is making a BIG difference in Mississippi. At the start of this week, @SBAgov had approved 37,505 #PPP loans totaling $3.13 billion for small businesses in our state. These forgivable #PPP loans mean thousands of Mississippians are being kept off unemployment rolls and our family-owned and operated businesses can afford to keep the lights on while we plan to reopen our economy safely.

.@SenateGOP fought to provide targeted relief for the American people, while @SpeakerPelosi and House Democrats unveiled a laundry list of unrelated partisan demands.

Here’s what @SenateGOP kept out of this week’s #CARESAct:

For those who have already lost their job, we are significantly increasing unemployment checks. #CARESAct

Each week of #BlackHistoryMonth, I am featuring several prominent Mississippians who are notable for their contributions to arts, entertainment, academia, sports, and politics. Fantastic news coming out of the European Union this morning. Enacting Magnitsky Act-style sanctions across the EU is a huge win for human rights and a much-needed enforcement mechanism to punish bad actors worldwide. Last week I met with representatives from Hungary, including Mr. Zsolt Németh, chair of the foreign affairs committee, and Dr. Zsolt Hetesy, the deputy chief of mission to the U.S., to discuss my support for the Magnitsky Act and the EU proposal. It is deeply disappointing that Congress has reached another funding deadline without an agreement on appropriations for this fiscal year. This is not the way to govern. Extending the current spending levels is better than a government shutdown, but it is still bad policy because it damages our national security and wastes taxpayer dollars.

And our prayers go out to their loved ones, who continue to bear the deepest pain. #NeverForget In the moments after the attack on 9/11, we saw the best of America in the selfless courage of our first responders and the passengers of United Flight 93. Gayle and I were horrified to hear of the shootings in El Paso and Dayton, and we grieve for the victims and their families. We unequivocally condemn these acts of violence and the bigotry, hatred, and cowardice that motivated them. Were it not for the bravery of the first responders, more innocent lives would have been lost. We thank the heroes in law enforcement and those on the scene who ran into harm’s way, saving lives.
