Basant, the Festival of Spring was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Kingdom of Jammu Kashmir. The rich, the poor, Muslims, Hindus - all wore yellow turbans. The women dressed in yellow from head to toe, whether they were young or old and all you saw was yellow in all directions.
It was not as if this was done on Royal Orders. People did so because they wanted to celebrate this Festival.

The capture of #Zojila was one of the most important operations of 1947-48 #JammuKashmir war. It not only established the supremacy of the Indian Army, it saved Ladakh from falling into the hands of the enemy. On this fateful day on November 1st, in 1948 young Capt SDS Jamwal of 7 Cavalry, with his 11 Tanks cleared Zojila Pass of Pakistani Army's occupation. This enabled a passage for linking up with Leh garrison, which was surrounded by Pak Invaders descending from Skardu side.

He is famous for Ranbir Penal Code & pioneering work in the field of postal services. He achieved unparalleled prosperity for his subjects. Maharaja Ranbir Singh consolidated the vast state whose foundation was laid by his father Maharaja Gulab Singh. He re conquered #Gilgit, and subjugated Hunza, Nagar, Ponial & Yasin. He organized regular campaigns, to which almost every Dogra family contributed a soldier in 1860.

#Dogra Maharaja Ranbir Singh introduced Postal & Telecommuncation services in Jammu & Kashmir in 1887. A telegraph service was extended from Sialkot to Jammu and to Kashmir. A state wide network of post & telephone was estd when the services reached Gilgit & Skardu in 1882. The services were further expanded under Maharaja Hari Singh in the 1930s. By 1944, 126 post offices were functioning in the state. A telephone trunk line was laid between Jammu & Suchetgarh on April 27, 1932 and another between Srinagar and Jammu on Oct 21, 1935.

The brave Brigadier had stoically accepted the role of Governor on 1st August 1947 despite the known dangers of this position. #DograHistory #JK When Pakistani raiders attacked J&K in Oct 1947, Major Brown and #Gilgit Scouts which he commanded, rose in revolt. More than a 1000 men surrounded the Governor’s house and Brigadier Ghansara Singh along with his men, including the driver and attendant put up a brave fight.

On 16th March 1846, after the British annexed Punjab, they handed over the mountainous territory to the North of Punjab to Raja Gulab Singh. #Dogra Cheiftain Raja Gulab Singh paid the war indemnity owed by Lahore Court to the British in return.
