WhatsApp will share its users' personal information, including phone numbers, IP addresses, contacts, & more with Facebook from Feb. 8, according to the new T&Cs. No opt-out. The only way to object is to leave the service & move to a service like Signal or Telegram. Signal and Telegram are now better alternatives if you are concerned about your privacy. Here’s what a Facebook wants out of you on WhatsApp and it’s own site:

It’s time for Big Tech to step up. Where are the free or cheap offers of laptops and tablets for school kids from Apple, Lenovo, Dell etc? Where are the “Broadband Payment Holidays” from the telcos? Sky? BT? Virgin? Time for you to step up as well.

Fantastic work by @sophie_e_hill getting the “My Little Crony” map of Tory cronyism (PPE contracts etc) - based on work by @allthecitizens & @carolecadwalla - mentioned today in Parliament Here’s the map. And I think it’s going to grow: sophieehill.shinyapps.io/my-little-cron…

THREAD: I’m pretty sick of the poor quality debate about whether to involve Huawei in the roll-out of 5G in the UK and elsewhere. The simple fact is that it is NOT the only provider of 5G networks - but it is the largest and (surprise!) the CHEAPEST ... not just because it is successful but because its R&D is *massively subsidized* by the Chinese government.

This support allowed Huawei to invest ~$12bn in 2017, which is nearly 3x Ericsson’s $4.1bn.

The “ITV Exposure” documentary on Sunday at 11pm will be a 1hr investigation into the Boris Johnson & Jennifer Arcuri story, by award-winning journalist John Ware. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7… I don’t know why it’s scheduled in such a late, “graveyard” slot, but I should imagine the documentary makers opted for any slot they could get from ITV, so they could get the piece out while the election was still on and the issue was still relevant.

The Tories have taken out a Google Ad to appear top of the page when people search 'register for a postal vote uk'. It comes ABOVE the .gov.uk official website portal. Before you can register you have to give them all your contact and personal data... gov.uk/government/pub… Should you click? This will cost them but very insignificantly. Your click will give them useful data on the google search data. If they switch off cookies they can still identifiy you via fingerprinting and IP tracking. Better to report the ad to Google.

German TV put the #PeoplesVoteMarch at 2.2 million, according to a German methodology for estimating crowds
The method is based on how many people pass every second on the official march route.

200 / sec for 3 hours is 2.16 million. The march was actually longer than 3 hours. Even if you call it 100 people every second you get 1.08m.

TECH FRIENDS!

There are connections between people/orgs in the whole #Brexit debacle that we just don't know about.

And they are hard to MAP.

So, we want people in tech to look at the best way to map them (e.g. LittleSis). Come to our meetup!

forms.gle/R63KftEuwn9tUs… This will be an @TechForUK Project, and we’re agnostic about the mapping platforms. The main thing will be to make it open source and extendable by the tech and journalism community.

Astounding that media STILL reporting that 44% of Brits prefer a #NoDealBrexit when that was the “EXTREME scenario” option! In fact only 26% picked it, as against 37% who want a 2nd Ref & to REMAIN IN THE EU! Even in the extreme scenarios, 42% still preferred to remain! YouGov: In the letter 25 Labour MPs (including frontbenchers) sent to Jeremy Corbyn urging him to agree a deal with Theresa May - and NOT request a second referendum, they MISINTERPRETED this YouGov poll to justify their position. But now we have a media narrative based on this crap!

Thread: Several prominent people in tech (VCs etc) have *privately* thanked me for being so public about a #FinalSay / #PeoplesVote. They are v. worried about the future of the UK. Then again, one or two say I’ve damaged myself. “Stick to tech!” Only 4 people (that I’ve counted) are actively pro-Brexit (I have a LOT of contacts so they are very much in the minority. Those who are against Brexit but remain quiet say they prefer not to “do politics”.
