The Florida legislature has given redistricting powers over to Gov. DeSantis. miamiherald.com/news/politics-…

RepresentUs CEO @joshuaglynn: “Once again, the governor is intervening in the redistricting process in an unprecedented way to secure the most extreme gerrymander possible... 🧵 It’s rare to see a governor veto maps passed by their own party, but this is the first time we've seen it happen because the maps weren't gerrymandered enough.

At least 389 bills were killed by the Senate filibuster between 2000 and 2020. Here’s just some of the notable legislation that never had a shot against the filibuster (Thread 1/8) The Paying a Fair Share Act of 2012, which included the Buffet Rule, would have created a 30% minimum income tax for people who make more than $2 million per year. 72% of Americans supported the Buffet Rule. politico.com/story/2012/04/… (2/8)

No, dead people don’t vote. Our election officials are there to ensure that. “Ballots of voters who have died are rejected in Michigan, even if the voter cast an absentee ballot and then died before Election Day” - MI SoS bit.ly/36qDqsP No, Biden didn’t magically get 130k MI votes. The 7 Deadly Sins of American Democracy 👇

1⃣ Voter Suppression - Broad attempts to systematically discourage or restrict access to registration and voting. 2⃣ Voter Erasure/Purging - A flawed process of cleaning up voter rolls by deleting names from registration lists.

While updating registration lists as voters die, move, or otherwise become ineligible is necessary & important, when done irresponsibly, it is disenfranchising.

We think of ourselves as Americans, as exceptional Americans. There's this idea of American exceptionalism. That shining city on the hill for the rest of the world to look to, and unfortunately, these days... Lest you were thinking of leaving the US, fleeing somewhere else, well, too bad. The European Union, Canada, the Bahamas won't let us in anymore. Meanwhile, we've now got unmarked federal agents in the streets, we've got protests happening all over the country in record numbers..

Dear President Trump,

If you are afraid of a free and fair election and cannot commit to a peaceful transfer of power, the Constitution offers another way out:

Resign.

#DefendDemocracy This is not partisanship, it’s patriotism. Since our founding, RepresentUs has staunchly supported Americans of every stripe whose love of democracy is stronger than their love of a political party.

It’s going to be really hard to address any other issue - whether it’s education, healthcare, or criminal justice, unless we first fix America’s corrupt political system. Here’s how we do it. #justiceforsale #unrigthesystem 1) Ban gifts from lobbyists to politicians. 2) Close the revolving door between Congress and special interests. 3) Enfranchise even more voters with automatic voter registration and vote by mail, so politicians actually represent us. #unrigthesystem

1/ America’s criminal justice system is broken and lobbyists and politicians have a vested interest in keeping it that way. They benefit from the system just the way it is. #justiceforsale #unrigthesystem 2/ Even though crime rates across the US are going down, America locks up 7 times more people now than we did in 1970...

It's fine, it's fine, politicians kept telling us about coronavirus.

Many politicians will wait until the very last minute to keep the status quo - that's what happened w/ #Covid_19 and that's what's happening with the climate crisis. -@Jamie_Margolin Founder of @ThisIsZeroHour Climate change doesn't care about political party. America has fallen behind the rest of the developed world in voter turnout.

Why? Some say because of inconvenience, like having to wait in long lines.

If you dig deeper, a more concerning reason exists: only 17% of Americans trust that D.C. politicians will do "what's right". Image Faith in democracy, our political institutions & our elected leaders is decreasing. & we can trace that back to corruption: the pervasive feeling that no matter who you vote for, what you care about, our politicians will prioritize wealthy donors over their constituents.

THREAD: Thanks to vote by mail, Florida & Arizona increased voter turnout in the March primaries, despite #coronavirus.

Illinois’ primary the same day did NOT have extensive use of vote by mail. Turnout dropped by 25%.

Every voter needs to be able to vote by mail. We cannot ask Americans to risk their safety & health to go vote in crowded polling places. Places like WA & CO (which have universal VBM) have proven that there are security measures we can adopt to make VBM safe & secure.

Some of these security measures include:

Colorado has universal vote at home - all *registered* voters get mailed a ballot.

Tune in: bit.ly/3dG5f37 Vote at Home is secure - @secstatewa makes the point that with increasing voter access to the ballot through Vote at Home, you need to add in security measures to balance it out.

1/ So @SenatorBurr first published an op-ed telling Americans not to worry about #coronavirus. Then he sold $1.5 million+ in stocks days before the stock market crashed. He had a different message for some of his donors. 2/ At a luncheon at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, a secret recording shows he told donors & biz groups the virus is "more aggressive... than anything that we have seen in recent history".

Today, millions of people are at the polls in Florida, Illinois, & Arizona, despite concerns about the coronavirus spreading. 5 states have postponed primaries amid the Coronavirus pandemic - Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland and Ohio. #FloridaPrimary #IllinoisPrimary 1/4 Wyoming is suspending in-person caucuses and asking voters to mail in ballots. New York and Puerto Rico are considering delaying their primaries to June.

There’s a simple solution: vote at home. Right now, there's a bill in Congress that would allow millions to vote safely.

1/ It’s presidential #primary season, and we’re in the middle of a #pandemic. President Trump has declared a #NationalEmergency, sports seasons are postponed, and yet voters may be forced to line up at crowded polling locations to #vote. 4 states still have #primaries next week! 2/ There’s a bill in the Senate right now that would make it possible for all Americans to #VoteAtHome, keeping everyone safe while ensuring the 2020 elections continue. Add your name to send a message to your Senators, urging them to pass the bill: act.represent.us/sign/vote-at-h…
