NEXT UP: 6th seed Sphinx monkey (Mandrillus sphinx) vs. 11th seed Black and Red Bush Squirrel (Paraxerus lucifer) #2021MMM
Sphinx monkey is named after the sphinx, a mythical creature w/the body of a lion, wings of an eagle, and head of a person. Astute observers may recognize sphinx in hits like #2014MMM, #2017MMM, & as part of the seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Sphinx were supposed to be intelligent & ferocious guards. It must be something about these monkey's colorful faces that just strikes us as wise - Rafiki, Simba's mentor in The Lion King, was also a sphinx monkey (or more commonly, mandrill). #2021MMM

NEXT UP: #3 seed Bearcat (Carnivora: Arctictis binturong) vs #14 seed Leopard Frog (Amphibia: Lithobates pipiens, previously Rana pipiens) #2019MMM
The common names of each of these species lands them in the Cat-e-Gory division: BearCAT & LEOPARD frog #2019MMM
This is our 3rd year seeing Bearcat, or Binturong, at MMM (previous appearances in #2014MMM & #2017MMM) because Bearcats are awesome (but not awesome enough to make it to the Wheatie's box.....yet #Is2019TheirYear #OrDoTheyLoveFigs) #2019MMM

Next up: #1 seed Tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) vs. # 16 seed ringtail cat (Bassariscus astutus) #2019MMM
The ringtail cat is not actually a cat. The scientific name, Bassariscus astutus, means cunning little fox, but it is not a fox either! the ringtail is in the raccoon family. In #2017MMM the ringtail shocked fans by taking out heavily-favored patas monkey. #UpsetCity #2019MMM
Major predators of ringtails include owls, coyotes & bobcats (cc @NatickBobCat). However, their flesh has a "strong flavor" & often isn't eaten once killed. They are also the state mammal of Arizona, home of MMM editor-in-chief @Mammals_Suck #2019MMM

NEXT UP: 8th seeded Bristol Fox (Vulpes vulpes) vs 9th seeded Racoon (Procyon lotor) #2018MMM
Our penultimate battle of the night (written mostly by
@chumblebiome) features two members of the taxonomic order Carnivora, which means they have a specialization for eating meat: #carnassials. Skull images from @NMNH #2018MMM
However, being part of Order Carnivora doesn't mean they only eat meat. Both of these Carnivorans can eat an omnivorous diet consisting of both plants and other animals. This makes them highly adaptable to many different types of environments! #UrbanJungle #2018MMM
