Really struck by the explicit religiosity of this #TDoR2020 display in Oxford yesterday. "Trans lives are holy."
Since it also featured this statistic I feel obliged to point out that it is totally baseless- thankfully, because if it was true that would be awful. I don't think it does anyone any favours to share alarming false statistics like this.…
What's omitted from almost all #TDoR2020 statements from UK politicians, councils, universities, hospitals & police depts is that the majority of the 350 murders of trans people in 2020 happened in Latin America, mostly Brazil. In the UK there were zero.

also just to illustrate how bad it can get with these "competent but not trans-friendly" doctors, my spouse @bogiperson went to see a doctor about a rash and was interrogated about their fertility instead, rash issue was not resolved - and that's not even the worst of it
The solution isn't "go to non-trans-friendly doctors when your issue is serious" bc many of us won't get the care even if the docs CAN provide it

Chances are you get interrogated about your gender/genitals/reproduction instead of treatment + accrue more medical trauma

I need to step away for Shabbat, and also to make some space for my feelings. Be well, all. See you on the other side.

It's #TDoR2020 and I want to talk about Corey, and more.

There's this thing where a trans person seeking healthcare must weigh, on one hand, the best healthcare you can get for whatever ails you, and on the other hand, whether or not your humanity is going to be respected.
And all too often you are choosing between "these people are the best to address my issue" and "these people will treat me as a person, respect my pronouns, understand my trauma." There is often NO OVERLAP between these.

This situation kills people.

I hear this from other trans people, I experience this myself, and I have discussed this with Corey. "This clinic is trans friendly but is not best about [insert disability/illness]," and you must choose one or the other.

One thing that always troubles me about #TDoR2020 is how the focus on the individually-perpetrated acts of violence can obscure the systemically facilitated death of so many trans people each year.
For example, though our beloved Lorena Borjas wasn't murdered by an individual, she was murdered by the state. She was killed by our collective neglect and failure to ensure that our community was supported as COVID ravaged neighborhoods in Queens.
It is through laws and policies that take away people's chances for survival that so many trans people die each year - most of them Black and Brown. There are things we can do beyond remembrance, beyond naming the dead - though this is important too.
