To slow down the spread = mitigation = going for herd immunity
To stop the spread = suppression = not going for herd immunity

To achieve it, both nations delayed lockdown, were v slow on test, ‘track & trace’ & put out unclear messaging (e.g. on masks) to create confusion. #COVID19 #HerdImmunityScandal
The UK & US were given the greatest gift any country could have wished for in the circumstances: a two-month head start

So the Trump & Johnson admins would prefer be seen as incompetent rather than expose what they are really up to.
This explains why, at a time when public trust is crucial, ex-WHO Director, @GabrielScally, says govt measures “seem to be designed to undermine public confidence.”
Because the idea that a govt would deliberately seek to undermine public confidence at a time of national crisis is so unthinkable, very few people would dare to think it, let alone say it aloud (or tweet it🥴!)
They govts know this.
