Je défends la production d'électricité à partir du nucléaire. Ça ne fait pas de moi un anti-EnR.

What is the @Greenpeace position on #fossil gas ? We know that they are against #nuclear power, but if that had to choose, will they first prefer to phase out of #fossil fuels or #nuclear power ?
Let's find out!
[Thread]

Have a look to this report titled « Silent Killers – Why Europe must replace coal power with green energy » and published in 400 ppm (2013)

greenpeace.org/static/planet4…

The document aims at explaining that 300 plants in EU burn #coal to produce #electricity, killing prematurely 22000 people every year while being the largest source of the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

Now go on P40 and see by yourself how fast they plan to phase out of #coal.
#Coal maybe the silent killer, but phasing out as fast as possible of #nuclear-low-carbon-production is @Greenpeace priority in 400 ppm (2013)

That's a fact.

The graph is extracted from a report called « Energy [r]evolution », published by @Greenpeace. I found a version of 2015 👇
greenpeace.org/static/planet4…

The report aims at providing 3 scenarios for the world energy transition (P59)

1⃣ A Reference scenario
2⃣ An Energy [R]evolution scenario
3⃣ An Advanced Energy [R]evolution scenario

I only focus on this thread with the results for electricity production in EU. Those are given from P328 to P330.

In order to compare all three scenarios,  I gathered the data for electricity generation (TWh/a) and installed capacity in one single table (I did not include renewables).
Let's see the Energy [R]evolution scenario … evolution until 2050

In 2012, installed capacity for hard-coal, nuclear and gas fired power plants is as follows :

Hard Coal : 117 GW
Nuclear : 127 GW
Gas : 240 GW

In 2030 and compared to 2012

Hard Coal : 50GW [-67 GW↔-57%]
Nuclear : 11GW [-116 GW↔-91%]
Gas : 309GW [+69 GW ↔+29%]

FACT: for @Greenpeace, it's fine to shut down 91% of EU nuclear-low-carbon fleet while increasing by 29 % gas fired power plants fleet

In 2040 and compared to 2012

Hard Coal : 9 GW [-108 GW↔-92%]
Nuclear : 0 GW [-127 GW↔-100%]
Gas : 281 GW [+41 GW↔+17%]

FACT: in 2040 for @Greenpeace,the EU had phased out of nuclear, not of coal and the installed capacity of gas fired power plant is still +17 %

And by 2050, 162 GW of gas fired power plant will still be available for burning fossil gas.

But be reassured, the EU had phased out of #nuclear power as fast as we could a long time ago, because it's actually @Greenpeace priority.

Before phasing out of #fossils.

@Greenpeace [R]evolution scenario pretty much spares #gas fired power plants. But why ?
Let's have a look at who wrote the report aside with @Greenpeace  : @GWECGlobalWind and @SolarPowerEU

@gwec : Global Wind Energy Council is a Wind Power Energy lobby. And in 2021, who can we find as partners along with the Wind Power Energy lobby  ? Fossil fuels industry ! Non-exhaustive list :

I'm not saying that's part of a plan.

Just pointing out that @Greenpeace wrote in 2015 a report about the energy transition with @GWECGlobalWind and @SolarPowerEU

@GWECGlobalWind and @SolarPowerEU have nowadays partners with the fossil fuel industry.

The report concludes that it is mandatory to shut down as fast as possible all nuclear power plants in EU, while opening gas fired power plants.

In 2050, still 162 GW of gas fired power plant will be available according to the 2015 Energy [R]evolution scenario.

Can @Greenpeace and #fossil fuels industry have common interests ? Of course not, that's impossible.

Greenpeace is the good guy. That's what I was told.
