Lebanon's caretaker energy minister cautioned on Thursday that if money to buy fuel for power plants is not secured by the end of the month, the country will be plunged into "absolute darkness."
Since the end of the civil war in Lebanon in 1975, power outages have been frequent, forcing Lebanese to pay a second power bill to private generators for three to 12 hours per day during the outages.
The country is currently experiencing its worst economic downturn in decades, and it is rapidly running out of hard currency to support imports.

11 March 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of the #Fukushima nuclear accident. Due to Fukushima, Germany reinstated in 2011 the nuclear phase-out decided in 2000, after a short 10-month-period of abandoning it - and the #Energiewende became political consensus. A thread on FAQs: /1
To start: Where do we currently stand in the #nuclear phase-out in DE? Since 2000, 13 nuclear power plants have been shut down, 11 of which since 2011. Six more will follow by the end of 2022. So far, we have achieved a good half of the nuclear phase-out. /2
Now to the FAQs:
(1) How has the share of nuclear power changed since 2011? The share of #nuclear power in the #electricity mix in DE has halved from 22% (2010) to 11% (2020), while the share of #renewables has more than doubled from 17% (2010) to a full 45% (2020). /3

There's a saying that there are two types of problems - good and the bad ones. Let me give you an example on both. Larry Fink, CEO of @blackrock, the largest asset manager globally, recently told that (1/20)
in order to reach global #sustainability goals, all companies will have to change their business models and adapt to the #climate-compatible operations. This is a good problem to have because by the time we reach this point, (2/20)
the progress towards full #sustainability will already be significant, and momentum will be strong.
However, we can't create this good problem without a concrete plan (3/20)

#Lebanon #Beirut #Electricity #Gasoline #Shortage

The Lebanese have suffered from extreme electricity rationing in Beirut for almost a week that exceeded 8 hours a day, while other areas experienced daily power rationing in total of 12 hours, Asharq el Awsat reported on Friday.
Meanwhile, Energy Minister Raymond Ghajar, the caretaker, informed that his ministry would not be able to pay the price of the fuel required to produce electricity after March.
Electricity Du Liban announced that its fuel oil stock has fallen to its lowest level, resulting in a decrease in the supply of electricity by approximately 400 megawatts of the total energy generated, which is approximately 1,400 megawatts.

We’re forecasting tight margins on the #electricity system over the next few days owing to a number of factors including weather, import and export levels and availability of generators over periods of the day with higher demand [1/3]
Unusually low wind output coinciding with a number of generator outages means the cushion of spare capacity we operate the system with has been reduced. We’re exploring measures & actions to make sure there is enough generation available to increase our buffer of capacity [2/3]
We'll update again later this evening – follow us for more information. To learn more about how we communicate with the electricity market to operate the system and balance supply and demand, check out our blog 👉bit.ly/3nJbDLX [3/3]

1/ Hi #energytwitter, I'm excited to share my thoughts on the changing role of #electricity #storage in the #renewable #energy transition in my new @Joule_CP Commentary! @CellPressNews 🔋

doi.org/10.1016/j.joul…

A little thread ⬇️
2/ I discuss three strands of the literature, and illustrate how the main driver for (bulk) electricity storage deployment shifts from taking up renewable surplus generation to supplying peak residual load when the renewable share increases (and what changes with sector coupling)
3/ I do so with residual load duration curves (RLDC) from a stylized #opensource model. The RL in one hour is the electric load during this hour, minus the potential generation of variable renewables. A RLDC sorts all hourly RL values of a full year in descending order🤓

1/ Continuing our threads this week on our #ParisAgreement-compatible benchmarks report, we first turn to #transport and the share of #electricvehicles, hugely important for #decarbonising our economy. Read on...
2/ For all #transport in all countries, low carbon fuels (#electricity, #hydrogen or #biomass) need to be at ~15-20% by 2030, & toward 100% in 2050. While 2030 benchmarks vary, all converge to global decarbonised transport sector by 2050. See our report  bit.ly/CAT_PSRsum Image
3/ Passenger #electricVehicles (or other #zeroemission vehicles) need to reach v high market share by 2030 almost everywhere (developed countries 95% market share) & 100% by 2040. The global passenger #car fleet will be almost 100% #emissions free by 2050. bit.ly/CAT_PSRsum Image

1/ Today's thread on our #ParisAgreement-compatible benchmarks report: all countries must decarbonise their #electricity sector by 2040, latest 2050. Emissions intensity must get to zero. #power #decarbonisation - see report here bit.ly/CAT_PSR1 Image
2/ #Decarbonising the #power sector is key: without it, other sectors cannot do so. The 2030 benchmarks are also key - if countries are not on the right pathway by 2030, they cannot reach their 2050 goal. #renewables bit.ly/CAT_PSR1
3/ All countries must ramp-up #renewables (or other CO2-free technologies), to 98-100%, ideally by 2040, latest 2050. Fossil #CCS not viable: economically it doesn't stack up against #renewables with storage; current #nuclear not nimble enough. bit.ly/CAT_PSRsum Image

Alarmed by reports of #Houthis arresting & assaulting #Jewish residents, forcing them to sell their homes, expropriating their properties and transferring ownership to Houthi leaders. Shocking if #YemeniteJews are unjustly being pressured to leave #Yemen. 1/5

Have urged the PM @narendramodi ji to direct the Power Minister to withdraw the proposed #Electricity (amendment) Bill, 2020. It is a cause of public concern as it impinges on rights of states & is against the basic principles of #federalism as enshrined in the #constitution. 1/3 ImageImage
The #ElectricityBill2020 prohibits states from giving subsidies & cross subsidies. In case it gets passed, many ongoing welfare schemes will be affected, which will create social unrest. As per its clauses, States will have to deposit money to buy power in advance. 2/3
The Bill is not feasible as state govts will no longer have the power to appoint chairman & members of the regulatory commissions. It will also give power distribution & transmission firms the right to appoint franchisees without permission from states. 3/3

Reforms are coming to India's power sector. #DISCOMs in union territories are proposed to be privatized. What has India learnt from privatizing #electricity #distribution #utilities in the past?

Some food for thought >

1/n

#ElectricityTwitter #EnergyTwitter #privatization
Private/PPP DISCOMs operate in a few cities of India—most notably in #Delhi (Tata Power Delhi Distribution, #BSES Rajdhani & Yamuna), although among others, #Kolkata (CESC) and #Mumbai also receive power from privatized #DISCOMs.

What benefits accrue from #privatization?

2/n
Improvements in performance are best outcomes of #DISCOMs' #privatization—AT&C losses have fallen from 50+% in 2002 to ~8% in '19 for Delhi's DISCOMs, and CESC incurs 9.8% as against the 14.3% allowable in Kolkata.
