Eight years ago, Kofi Annan’s Africa Progress Panel revealed that #DRC had lost $1.3 billion in deals struck with #DanGertler. Since then that figure has only grown. It will reach $3.71 billion if nothing is done.

Want to know more about Gertler's deals? Read this #thread.

Businessman #DanGertler has been making opaque and questionable mining deals in #DRC for over 20 years, benefitting from a close relationship with #Congo's former president Joseph Kabila. See video from our friends @TheSentry_Org. #corruption

In 2013, the Africa Progress Panel was the first to publish that Gertler’s deals cost the DRC $1.3 billion. New calculations show this was an underestimate. The loss today is $1.95 billion, with a further loss of $1.76 billion if nothing is done. See here: bit.ly/3ffCueS

#Gertler was sanctioned for #corruption in 2017 by the #US government. A secret license granted by the Trump administration to Gertler in 2021 to ease the sanctions was overturned by Biden's team a few months later. nytimes.com/2021/03/08/us/…

US court documents filed in a #corruption case involving US hedge fund Och-Ziff reveal a lot about #DanGertler’s tactics, including how he bribed #DRC judges to obtain lucrative mines.

To learn more about what is in the documents, read this thread.

Last year @Global_Witness & @PPLAAF conducted a joint investigation revealing #DanGertler may have been able to evade US sanctions through a vast money-laundering network and continues to operate freely in the #DRC’s mining sector. globalwitness.org/en/campaigns/c…

Gertler’s biggest deals involve two multinational mining giants: @Glencore and Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation (ENRC, now called ERG). Criminal prosecutors in UK, USA and Switzerland are investigating these deals for possible #bribery & #corruption. reuters.com/article/us-gle…

#Corruption has consequences. @raidukorg investigated just one of #DanGertler’s questionable deals and found 700 Congolese workers lost their jobs & 32,000 local residents were affected by corruption at the Metalkol (formerly KMT) #cobalt mine. bit.ly/3fa8Ckh

16 brave #DRC citizens came forward in 2020 as potential victims of crime in the UK #corruption investigation into Kazakh multinational mining company, ENRC, whose predecessor company now owns the Metalkol (KMT) mine. Their voices deserve to be heard. raid-uk.org/victimsofcorru…

#DanGertler says he intends to help #Congo's people through his new YaBiso scheme to share part of his royalties from the Metalkol cobalt project. It has been roundly criticised for selling back what should be state assets.

#DRC President Tshisekedi says he will tackle #corruption. In light of the new investigation showing the colossal losses, he should urgently order a credible investigation into all mining deals with #DanGertler. He must halt the haemorrhaging of funds #Congo so desperately needs.
