Networking tips that built my self-efficacy (thanks @midhatf3) a self-reflection and follow-along 🧵

(cc: @InclusiveGradEd @APSphysics)

apparently, MORE than 80% of jobs are found by networking?!! And networking is more than just starting a connection - it is also about maintaining it. I'll just leave some silence to absorb this statistic (looking at you #phdchat) and next up is identifying who's who

Networks and people are continuums... but identifying one or more roles a person in your network serves can *srsly* help you make a bettr elevator pitch.

Let's brainstorm & try to categorize our networks. Lets identify the category that needs more ppl. Lets build ntwrks robustly

Knowing where our network lacks helps us expand it. What kind of knowledge are you looking for? What is most pressing right now?

Is there someone who may offer an inkling to the answers you seek?
Which 1/3 goals do you have for this potential contact - and what can you offer?

Now that you know one thing that you seek, let's look at what platforms could help..
Looking to climb up a 🪜? Events are great to get noticed and pitch ideas. Socials/ volunteering is gr8 for making a connection + getting info.

Which venue is most accessible to you right now?

Focusing on informational #interviews in this pandemic landscape... its usually knowledge-gathering, and can be facilitated by ppl or cold emails.

Sometimes it takes a while to get noticed, but lowkey having a well-researched pitch makes cold emails warm and has worked for me.

Hoping you do get that ping back - here's a great guide to informational interviews.

What really struck me was the goal-setting. I didn't realize I could be so specific and ask for 2 more contacts or volunteer to sign up for something.

What specific goal would help you?

Oh and the questions during the interview!

I also personally have asked about compensation, benefits, time off, inclusivity/culture, and times of inaction.

Finally, after acing a few elevator pitches and impressing humans, how do you maintain and nourish your network?

@midhatf3 suggested checking in once in 1/2mo's with robust connections (people who tried their best to be connectors, advocates) and 1/6mo's with experts.

C.Kuniyoshi + J. Schlaterrer point out connections are individualistic & sharing some interests outside the connection goals may also create something longer lasting.

IMO therapeutic connections =/= robust connections and I think actions/commitments determine robustness better

And lastly giving a S/O to @APSphysics that has quite a few resources and guides. They're also coming out with a guide for #internationalstudents who want to get into Physics so 👀.
You can still look at APS even if u don't identify as a physicist - its pretty universal.
