(1/7) On this #WorldTurtleDay discover the story of Thunderbird, the loggerhead turtle 🐢 that travelled 6000km. Her epic journey illustrates 2 of the major threats that many #marine #species face 🦈🐋 – entanglement in #ghost fishing gear and #bycatch in industrial #fisheries 🆘

(2/7) Thunderbird was found entangled in ghost fishing gear by #SaveTheMedFoundation in July 2020, and taken to the @PalmaAquarium rescue centre in Mallorca 🐢

(3/7) We attached a #satellite tag 🛰️ before she was released as part of the “Oceanographic turtles”, a joint programme by @socib_icts, @alnitakmission, @PalmaAquarium and @ExeterMarine, with the support of @NOAA NMFS 📉🐢

(4/7) Satellite tag from @Tags4Wildlife provided information about her movements, dives and water temperature. RT data was received by #Argos satellite constellation from @CLS_Group and processed at @socib_icts DataCenter. Max depth recorded was 209 m!

(5/7) Thunderbird entered into the #Alboran Sea towards #Gibraltar strait, a challenging area due to its strong currents and high density of marine traffic🚢You can follow real-time data from @MarineTraffic and discover more about maritime chokepoints 👉📰

(6/7) Thunderbird then swam along the West African coast towards Senegal. Her journey ended near Dakar port 🛰️Telemetry and @GlobalFishWatch data suggest she was bycaught by a trawler🧐🆘

(7/7) A message of hope: we work on new projects to address the problems of #ghost #gear in the #Mediterranean and fishing #bycatch in West #Africa. Stay tuned for further news! 🐢🛰️
