So. Been watching this and I have some thoughts.
Robin talks about guys being unfairly maligned because they just ‘prefer to play as guys’. They’ve had the luxury of preference because they’ve always catered been for. I just had to accept that it would largely be a bunch of dudes, and the smallest sneezing of female characters.
It other entertainment we got the token female character. The Smurfette. The April. The Amy. That was it. One of the reasons I found myself very upset about the death of Carrie Fisher was because she was my way into Star Wars. We got one. The unicorn.
We often had to look beyond gender and find the most appealing male character (Murdoch, always Murdoch.) And we did. Over and over again. And huffy guys, now you get to do the same. It will be fine. You can do this. I believe in you.
There is no reason to think that Naughty Dog will deliver anything but the top notch quality they always do. Finger wagging about how diversity might get in the way of their great storytelling (and I’m not even sure what the hell that would look like) seems utterly redundant.
Of course people are excited about more even representation across the spectrum. Feels like the industry catching up with decades of shipping fan fiction. The desire has always been there. And I’m delighted to see so much attention given to a kiss in a world rife with hate.
I also just discovered how to chain link my tweets. So big day for me.
