TLDR: "Vendor the world of binary dependencies" doesn't help anyone. It's pure tech debt.
Furthermore: As data science & analytics becomes an increasingly larger portion of Python users, Python itself will be thrown into more multi-language use cases that involve R, JS, Java, Scala, C++... (1/2)
Each of those languages have (or need) a pkg manager and no language community wants to own the whole problem. Using Linux system pkg manager+Docker doesn't help if you're developing on Windows/Mac & just kicks can down the road.

Conda is the only cross-plat, multilang solution.
Everybody thinks they have a "package manager" problem. In reality, they have a "build environment specification" problem.

Don't blame Guido, don't blame setuptools, don't blame conda or Anaconda. Blame Kernighan and Ritchie, if you think it'll do any good.

This. This is a point that very very few people seem to understand.

The vast majority of the "magic of compound interest" for holders of capital (that doesn't come from fiat mint) comes from the leverage of regularizing labor, and to some extent, regularizing consumption.
By "professionalizing"/"regularizing", we scale revenue without scaling labor or operations cost. This scale is of ultra importance to investors, but not to workers, who generally desire affective labor over being a cog in someone else's machine (no matter how well oiled).
And unfortunately, AI and software are perfectly positioned to drive the cost of this labor to zero.

This dynamic can only be broken if a different ethos replaces "transactional consumption". That is the chicken from which the egg of post-Marxist freedom will be laid.

@benjohnbarnes @worrydream @tristanharris @edelwax "scarcity management" is a great term, but markets do most of the work there. Capitalism in pure form is about allocation of surplus, and its model kinda works when economy is tied to *labor scarcity*, and usufruct ties equitably to yields coming from labor and investment.

[See Veblen Engineers&Price System] In early days of industrial labor and capitalism, this happened at a rate such that older generations of workers could re-skill or work a lifetime w/o re-skilling.
@benjohnbarnes @worrydream @tristanharris @edelwax Last 40 yrs of globalization of labor and credit/finance mkts, PLUS massive labor devaluation through computer tech, means that while legacy capital system gave many in tech industry great profit sharing, a huge amount of economic labor base was pushed out of the market.

Not going to speak for @johnrobb but my read is that *networks* circa 2018 differ from mere "connected hierarchies" of the past. As the military is learning in contemplating drone warfare, the only way to fight a network (swarm) is with another network.
Unfortunately for those of us who admire/appreciate the utility of existing, classical value systems in maintain societal infrastructure, those value systems are defended by stodgy institutions or stable attractors that developed from a low-bandwidth memetic environment.
They are not suited to disruption by dynamic organizational patterns that are now possible in a highly connected environment. Birds don't resemble fish, even though both operate under similar laws of fluid dynamics. The West's enlightenment ideals will drown if they don't adapt.

the way firms respond is very intriguing to me. for example, ASKfm indicates that they do this to improve user experience, yet the public website of one tracker (Huq) even has an earnings calculator and describes how they pay for your data.
in fact Huq is probably the most direct about buying your location data from app developers. cannot get much clearer (huq.io/publishers/). I do not think these payments are addressed at all in responses from any companies.
“we are tracking where you shop using code packaged in this app but no longer use GPS for that” seems, to me, like an extraordinarily strange rebuttal.

Interesting discussion of developer compensation on HN, especially in the Bay Area: news.ycombinator.com/item?id=172869…
tl;dr: Total compensation for the largest companies is often >300k. If this surprises you, you might find @patio11 's take useful.
Some thoughts: 1/8
First, there's much discussion on HN about how startups can compete with this level of compensation. Probably the best answer is they shouldn't. And I don't mean start-ups should pay less and make up the difference with stories, promises and dreams. 2/8
The biggest tech companies are milking market opportunities worth billions. Software engineering has diseconomies of scale, so they can't simply hire two people and pay them 50% each. Developers are therefore simply worth more to big companies. 3/8

Modern farming is what happens in Iowa, etc. 10,000 acre plots of corn. Feed lots. 4,000 cows. Manure ponds.

The transition to modern farming happened during / after WWII, but was really just a continuation of existing trends.

will this get handled similar 2 how cigs/medicine/food started to be regulated (+ monitored by consumers) once problems became more visible?
cognitive intake should be just as conscientious as physical intake, yet there's a huge gap in how we treat these issues
