In a speech on the Senate floor, the Democratic leader, Sen. Chuck Schumer says that there should not be a limit to two witnesses. Specifically, he notes that Mark Judge should testify. He also raises the "issue of credibility," noting other questions about Kavanaugh's answers.
Feinstein, in a new statement, also questions the two-witness plan —>
Here's our running @BuzzFeedNews story on the latest Kavanaugh's developments —> buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
This seems to be an interesting development, and shows the power that Collins holds, despite not being on the committee —>
Regarding Collins' proposal, I would note that the committee, on the Republican side, is all men, but Kavanaugh reportedly has retained Beth Wilkinson as his lawyer in this matter.
Trump on Kavanaugh process: "Speaking for all of the Republicans, we feel we want to go through this process and we want to give everybody a chance to say what they have to say. So we have time available, we will delay the process till its finished out."
Trump on FBI involvement: "I don’t think the FBI should be involved because they don’t want to be involved; if they wanted to be, I would certainly do that. As you say, this is not really their thing. The Senators will do a good job."
Trump, asked if he's spoken to Kavanaugh: "I haven’t wanted to speak with Judge Kavanaugh because I know somebody will ask what you asked me, which is have you spoken to him."
Trump on Kavanaugh: "[H]e can handle himself better than anybody; he’s a very outstanding man. ... I’m totally supportive, I’m very supportive. Few people that I’ve ever seen have been so outstanding as Judge Kavanaugh."
Blumenthal is attacking the Republican process, saying that as a former prosecutor, Ford is not being treated appropriately: "They have no interest in truth or justice; they simply want to ram this nomination through."
Sens. Blumenthal, Leahy, and Jones are sending a letter to McGahn asking about when he knew about the allegation and what he did about it, Blumenthal says.
Others speaking include non-committee members Sens. Murray, Murphy, and Gillibrand, as well as Sen. Hirono, who is on the committee.
Of the Republican process, which Hirono calls a "smearing," she says, "This is so patently unfair."
On the Republican side, Majority Leader McConnell says that the main purpose of raising the issue is to delay the nomination. Cornyn says Republicans have offered Ford the choice of testifying at an open or closed session.
Trump talks about Kavanaugh's earlier FBI background checks and says he feels bad for Kavanaugh. "This is not a man that deserves this," he says.
Trump, after going on at length about Democratic obstruction, returns to Kavanaugh: "I feel terribly for him, for his wife ... and for his ... daughters. I feel terribly for them."
In his answer, Trump did not mention Dr. Ford or her allegation of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, nor did he express any feelings about her.
This is the closest Trump came to mentioning what was at issue: "Hopefully the woman will come forward, state her case. He will state his case before representatives of the United States Senate."
The Kavanaugh developments have not only delayed his nomination vote — but also led to the cancellation of the entire executive committee meeting that was set for Thursday. An appeals court nominee and eight district court nominees also had been on the agenda.
Here were the other nominees who were set to be considered:
Through a lawyer, Mark Judge, who Ford wrote in her letter also was in the room, sent a statement to the Judiciary Committee and says he doesn't want to speak publicly about the matter. buzzfeednews.com/article/zoetil…
To understand this tweet — — read this story from yesterday: bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
Chair Grassley, meanwhile, issued a statement responding to the letter from Dr. Ford’s lawyers. In notable part, Grassley says that, in his view, no further investigation from the FBI is needed before she testifies.
OK, some things to clear up from Sen. @OrrinHatch — a former chair of the committee. He tweeted a few odd things tonight. First, there was this:
Here's Ginni Thomas, Clarence Thomas's own wife, writing about what happened in 1991, when accusations from Anita Hill were raised after the first committee hearings had been completed: people.com/archive/cover-…
So, it's not really clear what he's talking about here.
Then, there's this. First of all, the statement came from a DOJ spokesperson — not the FBI. Second, that does not resolve the question I referenced in the earlier tweet about the Bloomberg reporting on what the FBI could do if the White House asked it to.
(And, if you clicked on the link to the People article from Ginni Thomas you’ll get an eye-opening/eye-popping view into the way mass-media reacted even after the Thomas confirmation hearings.)
And, a tweet from Trump that speaks so softly it barely exists.
