There was an entire category of Snoopy on Jeopardy today and none of the contestants knew who Joe Cool was.
FYI: If you're wondering what the best Joe Cool strip was, it's this one.
This one always used to make me laugh as well.
Joe Cool debuted around the time Schulz's own children went to college, in the late 60s/early 70s, around the time many Baby Boomers were at university.
I'd always assumed Joe Cool was a satire on some of the characters Schulz must have seen hanging around college campuses at that time. After his kids graduate, Joe Cool becomes much less prevalent in the strip.
Here's one of the weirdest strips in Peanuts--the Joe Cool character of the 70s had morphed into Joe Grunge by the 90s. Sadly, this is the only appearance of Joe Grunge.
