Medieval women in York had the right to pursue their own careers and businesses, and if accused of wrongdoing, to answer for themselves and themselves only, even if married.
Medieval women in London had the right to take on female apprentices if the practiced a craft or a trade.
Medieval women cheated in the market and in the workshop just like medieval men did, and they were punished for it as well. Interesting example of a fishmonger selling rotten goods, and a weaver who nearly managed to fake a tapestry (maybe to save on materials, or labor)?
Here a team of medieval women working their own commercial bakery in London are accused of overcharging for their goods but get off on a technicality. Poor Roger le Paumer, sheriff of London, must have felt humiliated as he was only trying to do his job for the public good.
BTW, these would make great material for a TV Documentary. Here some women of Notthingham are accused not only of selling fake goods, but also of being forestallers, i.e. people who bought goods at a discount before they reached the market. Today we would call them VAT dodgers.
