This is a really good question! In terms of the barriers to stocking the mifepristone in clinics, it can be a hassle for OB/GYNs if they only have a small number of patients who need it. The drug is expensive—about $70 per tablet. We see this with clinics and IUDs which are $1K.
Additionally, some doctors don’t want to contract with the manufacturer and get on a list that identifies them as an abortion provider. This is not an unreasonable fear given the threat of violence we providers face.
Some pharmacists might refuse to provide, but I don’t think the majority will. Pharmacists are interested in playing a larger role in sexual and reproductive health. Our most recent study on the topic: japha.org/article/S1544-…
It would be great if patients could access medication abortion via mail order as well, but again, we'd have to remove the onerous restrictions. forbes.com/sites/ritarubi…
